Fishfinder view angle (detection mechanics)

I have a brand new Fishmark 480.
When I see the fish on the screen, what does it mean in reality?
I know it doesn't have to be directly under the transducer, but what
is the maximum offset that tells the computer to display the fish? Is
it a six foot circle or something similar? Can it be adjusted?

You'll need to read the manual to figure out the adjustments, and I would
also HIGHLY recommend Dan Warme's Sonar Video. (You can buy it at:
www.outdoorfrontiers.com).

The little fishes that you are seeing can actually be anything underwater
that is not attached to the bottom of the lake. The first thing that I'd do
is turn off the fish symbols and learn to read the screen with the arches.
What the fishies are doing is saying... "Hey, there's something down
there... I need to display a fish symbol". That something can be a log,
school of baitfish, or just about anything. Once you learn how to read the
arches, you can pretty much get a more accurate idea whats there.

As far as the transducer, you'll usually have a 20 degree cone. The video
shows the amount of coverage at different depths and tells you how to
guestimate the area for just about any water depth. I'm sure that there are
others here that can explain it too. Hopefully they'll respond.

Congrats on the new depth finder... that's one that I've also been looking
at for the front of my boat. One other thing... as far as mounting it, I
suggest you look at the Johnny Ray mounting systems that Bass Pro Shops
carries. It beats taping it to the trolling motor.
