Pulled into Grayling MI about 2 in the am on Saturday thanks to the
Indianapolis rush hour and some dude who blew by me deciding to take out the
lanes a few miles up the road.

Got the wakeup call at a Gawdawful hour and found myself on the banks of the
Au Sable near Smith Bridge with a large cup of coffee in one hand a Mauer
4wt cane in the other as the sun was rising. The air temp was in the low
30's I did not have great expectations other than to enjoy my coffee
streamside. But then again it is Northern Michigan and the fish endure 6-7
months of winter every year and the Au Sable is a Spring Creek :) While
there were no signs of rising fish there were some spinners on the water. I
tied on a size soft hackle emerger pattern and began casting into the foam
lines and riffles against the far bank. After the fourth drift, the fly
hung up on a log or some such. I pulled it free and proceeded on down
stream. A few drifts later a fish flashed at the fly as it finished the
drift, I went to set the hook and it pulled free, I drifted the fly again,
again a fish struck and again the fly pulled free. Two Drifts, two strikes,
two misses. I figure I'm a little rusty so I cast again in the same area
nothing. I move down a few steps and cast again, again a strike and again a
miss. I might be a little slow but I catch on sooner or later and checked
the hook. The Tiemco had broken halfway up the bend, guess I should have
used Mustads. It just meant I didn't have to wash the fish smell off of my
hands when I went to get the wife from the motel for breakfast. :)

The sun had come up full by now and it was a bright sunny day with very
little cloud cover. After breakfast my wife dropped me off at the Fly
Factory where I met up with a friend and off we went to the Manistee. Under
those conditions we did not think we would be doing a whole lot of catching
but the canoe traffic would be minimal and there were parts of this river I
wanted to see in the daytime and mark for exploration during next year's hex
hatch.

We put the boat in at the "Hole in the Wall" and proceeded on down stream.
The Manistee is a gin clear slow flowing river with lots of deep holes and
dead falls but very little riffle water which on a bright day like Saturday
makes the fishing tough. I tied a little Robert's yellow drake to the tippet
and proceeded to toss the fly into shady spots using a little 3wt glass rod.
In the next five hours we had a blast catching little Michigan Brookies and
one little brown trout. In between the brookies, beer, and malt, I made sure
I marked the interesting holes into the GPS unit for further exploration.
I'd like to say I caught a bunch of big fish but the brown was barely 7" and
the brookies were in the four - six inch range. But I was on the river and
not back in Indy mowing the yard. After about 5 hours we came to the take
out point and made our way back to Grayling.

After a decent prime rib and shrimp dinner at the Holiday Inn I spent the
next few hours killing a bottle of 21yo Balvenie on porch of the Fly
Factory with some friends and making plans for next years trout bum bbq.
After the malt was disposed of, I headed back for the night.

Sunday came early and I was more intent on walking the state lands near the
Manistee for Grouse and Woodcock habitat than I was interested in fishing
but I strung up a rod anyway and tossed a fly box in the shirt pocket. Again
it was too early and even colder than Saturday. The thermometer in the car
read 31 when I got out of the car.
I walked a ways, marked some birdie spots for future reference and found the
river to rest as I keep putting off my hip replacement and I was reminded
just how much out of shape I have become. I tied on a parachute hopper and
then tied a parachute Borchers Drake off the hopper. Before I cast, I
trimmed the hackle and the post so the fly would sink. I walked out to a
bend and cast against a big sweeper laying out in the stream. The first
couple of casts were just embarrasing and any fish that hit those drifts
would had to have been suicidal. I rested a few minutes, reminded myself
that i was not casting cane and glass anymore and went back at it. I cast
off the same sweeper and got a great drift, as the hopper floated just past
the end of the sweeper, it hessitated and I lifted the rod. All hell then
proceeded to break loose. The fish took off downstream, but I was not
wearing waders and I was not going to wet wade at that air and water temp so
I had to depend upon rod and the reel to do the work. The Hardy Perfect was
singing its song but since I had a five weight and 3X tippet I figured I
could apply some pressure and began trying to force the fish back in. I
would get the fish close and it would take off again. It even decided to
make like a Rainbow and try a jump but for once I was controlling the line
and the barbless hook stayed in place. This went on for a few minutes when I
finally got the fish close enough for a good look. As i suspected it was a
brown, and it might have exceeded 20" but as luck would have it I was not
going to find out for sure. As I got it close to the bank, it decided to
make one more run, and i was not quick enough to palm the reel and it made
for the bottom of hole behind the deadfall. I saw it swim in circles at the
of the pool wrapping my tippet around the limbs. I gave it a tug but it
wasn't going anywere. So I tugged harder and broke off the tippet, cussed a
little made a mental note to revisit when I come back in September.

All in all it was a fun weekend and it helped lessen the sting of going from
45 to 46. I will be back :)

I've forgotten what it's like to tie on big flies since moving out west.
Last trout I hooked on top was with a size 24 midge on California's Hot
Creek. I need to sneak in a trip back to Michigan one of these days.

There's *nothing* in flyfishing like the sweet purr of a Hardy. I have an
LRH; a JLH; and my newest...a Bougle. The Bougle was purring on big Missouri
River Bows...gotta love those reels. The Abels stayed in the van most of
that trip.

Tell me about it, except for a couple of fish on a bunny leech at the juan,
i've not hooked a trout in the three states I've fished west of the
Mississippi and anything bigger than a 20.

There's actually been people who have posted here complaining about the
"noise" Hardy and other similar reels make. Poor misquided souls.
Love those Bougle's and JLH's. There's a new grass stick in my future and I
think I'm going to put one of the Angel's on it.

For me it stings anyway but I'll get over it. Problem is I not only need a
new hip but I also need a new knee on the same side and we can't decide
which to do first. That and I still have some mobility, just not much
endurance. Motrin is a wonderful thing.

For some reason I pegged you as younger. Between you and Mr. Reid, I might
as well be 65 next to you two.

Billy Books (the *******!) is on his way some time before dawn. :(

In an email exchange (which, miraculously, did not get posted to ROFF)
earlier today, he and I agreed that we MUST do an expedition to the L.P.
holy waters next year......in addition to the planned U.P. clave. He voted
for the hex hatch. I'm game......but the dates must be fixed far in
advance.....too many trips have failed to materialize for want of being
fixed and on the calendar.

What started as a clave of folks from the old compuserve fly fishing program
has turned into an annual get together the 4th week of June. In the 10 years
I have been going there we've hit the hex about half the time, two years
(1996 and 2004) there was not crap happening except for a lot of drinking
and BSing while the other three were solid into the brown drakes.

Barring some event which means I 'm no longer amongst the living, I will be
in Grayling from June 22nd through June 26th, with one of the weekdays
tentative for a visit to a certain dead lawyers' shack and pond. I can't
promise you the hex but I think you will like most of the company.

We're in the process of changing the focus of our little event from a fund
raiser back to a fishing trip if you would like.

If you're that dead set on getting the hex tho, I would suggest sometime
right after the 4th of July.

Those dates far enough in advance for you?

Wayne;

On the Missouri I was playing a hot Bow when two sports came by in a
drift-boat; and one said to the Guide "What a *loud* reel that guy has". (I
was using the Bougle at the time). The Guide smiled; and said "He's playing
a trout, that reel sounds fine to me".

I really wanted to reply to the guy...but had my hands full at the moment.

Wayne, I've got a Bougle with less than 10 hours fishing on it and I don't
care for the style, design, functionality OR the clatter. If you're
interested in a possible sale/swap, drop me an email.

If you're still interested in a click and pawl reel, the discontinued
Redington CT's are excellent reels. You can usually pick them up for
about $50 on EBay. I bought my first for $100 and I thought it was a
steal at that price. They make an especially good reel for light
outfits, 4 weight and below. They're solid, well made reels and are
light in weight. (And the click isn't obnoxious, IMO)

Hear, hear. I don't know who decided fly reels *ought* to
make noise, but imo it's whacko. It wouldn't be so bad if
it was only when a fish peeled line, but it's also anytime
I strip line off the reel. I like peace and quiet when I'm
fishing.

I'm on the fence on this one.....I love hearing my CFO scream when I have a
good fish on, but it does ger a little annoying when stripping line.

I suspect Fortenberry would be hard to fish with, probably ok on the forward
stroke but on the back cast I doubt there would be much in the way of flex.
After a while the arm would get kind of tired too as he's probably a little
too heavy to cast repeatedly but on the other hand he'd probably do a decent
job protecting tippets.

What part of the Missouri were you fishing? I ask because I bought a week at
a cabin at a conservation auction near the Dearborn exit on I-15 that I have
to use between now and the end of June. I don't know a thing about the
area.

Either would work for me. Let's wait a bit and see who else is interested.
I know for sure that Bill Claspy wants to go. I can easily twist Joel's
arm.....if he has anything like a hole left in his schedule for the rest of
his life. Guarantee a trip to that lawyer's shack and we can probably tease
one of his colleagues up from down in N.C. (especially if we can convince
him that Michigan bugs are the ones that couldn't hang with the big kids in
WI......and the pasties are nice and fresh).

And, who knows, there may be a few others out there I haven't entirely
alienated.........hey, not EVERYBODY reads ROFF......yet. :)

It has nothing to do with "western" or "eastern." It's all about

Hmmm. Too late now but what might that be?
The wife had a new knee put in a week ago Tuesday and the doc said it
was basically the same as the other knee he did for her in '96. I had
hoped he might offer up some advanced hardware but only the surgical
procedures seemed to have changed - smaller incision, something he
called "bloodless surgery". Still had to cut away some muscle to fit
everything in - but she is recovering faster than the last time.

What other sort of knee replacement could have been done?

Ignorant question time.

How do you do that? I hate the reel noise. I've got the reels that
came with the KPOS package deal and I'd much rather have quiet time on
the water. Or at least hear only the stream and the wind and my own
singing.

My kid is upright and walking, and therefore is the butt of many a "clumsy"
joke. However, if he had severed his spinal cord and was in a wheelchair
steering with his nose, I sure as hell wouldn't be tossing "cripple" insults at
people.

On some reels the pawl (the baseball card in Greg's analogy) can be
disengaged by simply turning it......it doesn't need to be removed.
Remember though, that unless there is another braking mechanism or "drag"
disengaging the pawl WILL result in large quantities of line piled up around
your feet and/or snarled line on the spool whenever a pull on the line
causes the spool to spin. The original purpose of the click mechanism was
to prevent just such occurrences. On cheap reels lacking any other
mechanism that is still its function. Where there is another
mechanism.....and you shouldn't have any trouble at all recognizing it if
it's there....you can safely disengage or remove the pawl as long as it
isn't, as in the unusual case Greg mentioned, an integral part of that
mechanism. In general, when there is an adjustable drag mechanism, the
click drag is superfluous and, as has been noted, exists only to announce to
anyone nearby that Moby fish is tearing line off your reel.

The Bougle, loaded with a DT 5wt, is currently the reel I use on that nice
little bamboo rod that was wrested from the clutches of The Ulcerous Dwarf
of Pahrump and raffled to yours truly at "Penns 2003: Return of the Son of
the Biblical Flood". (A great clave, BTW). I would need a nice reel with
the same (small) foot size as the reel seat on said rod does not accept all
reel foot sizes. If the replacement reel could sound less like an amplified
jake brake on an unlubricated 1962 Peterbilt, so much the better.

Whatchagot?

There's nothing quite like those steelies for long road trips. :-)

As if you need to ask, my friend.

Wayne, I really liked that first camp ground south of 72 on the South Branch
(Canoe something). And the water upstream from there through the Mason
Tract is... Well, let's just say that I'd like to fish it again.

Short of camping, I have enjoyed my stays at Gates' as well, and they aren't
very expensive.

Ain't you got a cabin up there yet?

that would be the Canoe Campground ;)

I'm supposed to fish it between now and the end of the season, hoping I can
fit it in.

> Ain't you got a cabin up there yet?

Nope, would like to have one but it's 6 hours from indy and the past four -
five years have been a little tougher financially. But my daughter is
finally through school and the wife is basically healed, maybe in a couple
of years. In the meantime I have access to one when I go up on my own.

Let me know when you want to go up again, if I can get free I might just
join up with ya.

Don't do it! The money you would tie up in a cabin on the water
will pay for lots of rentals, and then somebody else will have to
cut the grass, rake the leaves, trap the mice, carry out the trash,
paint the shutters, clean the eaves, maintain the septic system,
etc., etc., etc., which will leave ever so much more time for you
to fish and drink.

Sorry to post this on the newsgroup but for some reason my mail link is not
working.

I've got a few reels that would work nice on that cane rod. Problem is
parting with them. IMO a cane rod needs a classic style reel, either a Von
Hoff style, Akron Pflueger (wish I could get my hands on one), or a
Hardy/CFO. I've got a Ross San Miguel that would not look bad on it but it's
not classic if you're so inclined.

The 2/3 and 3/4 are sweet little reels. Although they're getting harder
to find on EBay, you can still usually pick one up for $50 to $70, a steal.
