View Full Version : Very...Very Late Lapland Clave Report!

A lot has already been said about how well the clave went and I will just
add my own spin. A lot briefer than "Thomas the Viking who just discovered
his roots". Exciting writing, Mister, thank you!

1st of all, sincere thanks to Roger Ohlund who took care of the organisation
and throughout the clave ensured things ran smoothly and participants felt
happy on all fronts: logistics, fishing, food...Indeed Roger did a very good
job of it and even entertained us with a few fishing stories...

The people:
The group was quite a mixed bunch and I felt we all got on very well: a
great satisfaction to me! Hans even feed me with fresh trout when i fainted
like a young maiden after the now famous 1st moquito infested night!

The scenery:
very good with the impressive presence of the high cliff face right in
front of us opposite the cabin. Cabin that made us work -walk- for our
fishing and develop our bog reading senses. I came with a view of fishing a
bit less and enjoying the scenery more (very grown up all this!) and
altogether I achieved my goal. Even had my emotional moment on top of the
local peak overlooking the Laisan and Hurasjokk valleys. Snow was constantly
visible on nearby summits and it added to the wilderness experience.

Laisan river:
Excellent clarity, cristal clear up to 10meters. Hard to estimate depth as
it is so clear, pleasantly misleading!. Amazing and a real challenge for the
angler with spooky fish. Good variety of pools and opportunities for
different types of fishing: pocket water nymphing, sight fishing, wet flies
and plenty of lure fishing for the biggies...
Insect life was poor and catches to a 3rd of what we expected but that is
fishing... I will have to wait another year to catch my "pig" (large brown
>2kg). I tried to be creative and think outside the box in my approach.
Using large lures included a mouse (goodbye tail!) even on a medium sinker.
Next year I will be even bolder with bigger streamers. Vaughan demonstrated
that large trout eat large prey!
Interesting to see the local brown trouts showing a genetic characteristic
with a white band at the edge of fins. I will not mention artic char: hum,
patience and teeth grinding.

Next year might involve a bit of drifting downriver, and I definitely would
like to retain the mountain element. There is much more to discover in
Sweden. Choosing is the hard bit.

A stop in Ammarnas:
Fished there for two days after the clave. The fiskecentrum catch record
showed that amazing catches were being made in August...up to 7kg of ...pig!
Not a sign of them for me but the upper Vindelalven looks very nice. Also
very clear and characterised by steep ledges in place that must hold some
monsters. The fishing was quite hard but what we caught fighted very well.
The village is charming with ancestral meadows and a sami village

Tightlines and my kind regards to the Clavers

You were a bit early........they have reported just as big....pigs....this
year.
Can't imagine the feeling of a 7 kg (lb15.5) wild brown trout, just as well
I guess.......what's left to aim for once you've caught one of those?

Glad you enjoyed yourself.

<You were a bit early........they have reported just as big....pigs....this

yes for the peak time but still the pig in question was caught several days
before our arrival on 12th August. and plenty of smaller ones, 2, 3, 4kg
with it since.

yes, hum...but still very willing to take the chance. Will still be time to
be disappointed

PS Have got all my photos readily scanned on a cd. At your disposal for the

How is the hunting season starting? are you going to save some moose hair
for us?
