I'm considering taking off again for much of Sept. I've never fished much
past the start of hunting seasons ... suggestions on West to Far West places
I might catch a trout or two ... especially on the surface .... in
September?

Larry, you musta missed the discussions from a couple of years ago. The
authority on the subject hath proclaimed that there is no dry fly fishing in
the West after Labor Day. Sorry about that, but you still have a few days
left. Hope you like numphs and streamers.

The best time to fish in the Rocky Mountain West, IMO, is after Labor
Day because the crowds are gone. For example, Silver Creek and the
Owyhee have good mahogany dun hatches in September and October, and
they're deserted compared to the summer.

I don't know who you're talking about, but it can't be me.
I said there was a 50-50 chance that the kickass dry fly fishing
would be over for the season by the third week in September at
the higher elevations (like the Henry's Fork).

Catch many fish on dry flies during that 'Clave ? Or did you
get snowed on ? ;-)

Most folks who fish in that area during the last half of September
either fish for browns coming up into the tribs of the Yellowstone
to spawn or head for the lower elevations (think the Missouri).
I do neither, I don't like to bother fish on their way to spawn
and I really dislike tailwaters.

You can find good dry fly fishing in late September, even into
October, at the lower elevations and on the tailwaters.

Well Ken will tell you there are no hatches in the Rockies in September.
However, it is one of my favorite months. This year, I think the fishing
here in CO, at least, will be excellent. We've had some significant
precipitation throughout most of the Summer and the rivers have
maintained VERY good levels. My home river is just now approaching what
is prime for me.

In terms of hatches, the Mayflies tend to be smaller in size. The PMD's
are smaller and the Olives are starting to come out again. There are
also a variety of caddis about.

But if you want to hit a specific hatch in September, try and hit the
black caddis hatch on the Bighorn.

Most massive hatch I ever fished.

Well, Ken won't tell you any such thing, nor has Ken ever told
anyone such a thing. See my response to Dan'l.

You guys are still bitter because I was right about the Henry's
Fork 'Clave.

So that's been years ago, get over it already.

What were you right about? I caught trout on dries at the HF and don't
remember snow (we did have one day of cold rain). A lot of nymph fishing went
on there, but so did it this past summer on the Madison.
