but he did get his ass kicked!
went back out yesterday evenin, after the old man finished his nap- and
fished my favorite local stream- (you know, the where he stole those trout
from me last week-end), and i added to my brookie, and sunfish catches of
earlier in the day by bringing to hand another brook (8") and a little
rainbow (4"). mr. church did have the opportunity to take the fly out of
the lips of a nice 8" brookie, though.
final score:
snake:
3 trout
1 sunfish
Mr. church:
1 trout
i would give him a chance to defend himself, but the old fella is nappin
again :-)

Keeping score only angers the fishing gods. Bad form indeed. Some day,
you will pay for this hubris.

If you're a good atheist like me, you can keep score all you want and prove
that there are no "fishing gods."

I'm inclined to agree with your position on the likelihood of the existence
of deities.....aqueous or otherwise.....and thus also the chances of
discomfiting them, but I'd suggest that anyone with your track record around
water would do well to hedge his bets. :)

i think you're right about that. went out this morning, and couldn't get
out a decent cast for a good 1/2 hour. then i made numerous attempts to
decorate the trees, although i did manage to save my fly each time. then i
caught my fly up in a log in some creepy, snakey lookin water, and waded out
to my waist to get it - so much for fishin in there. it was such a nice
spot- frank had brought to hand a pretty 8" brookie from there not too long
before that, and so i waited a while until i thought maybe the fish might
come back out from hiding, and fished it some more.
i never even got so much as a strike during the whole mornin. plus, i got
skunked......
no more bragging
(well, for a little while anyway ;-} )

I know this from experience. When my wife and I started fly fishing, we
used to keep score, or brag about how many more fish we would would
catch or were catching than the other. All it really seemd to result in
was an immediate reversal of fortune. For example...
Me: "How many fish do you have?"
Her: "Three, and you?"
Me: "Seven...snicker snicker..."
half an hour later:
Her: "How many now?"
Me: "Eight...and you?"
Her: "Fifteen....loser"
And so on.
We found it was much not to keep count.

Hmmm......you might want to reconsider that position.
