The wife wants to spend a romantic day the Park. Should I bring the
4wt along? If so, where are some good spots? Any ideas are
appreciated. Thanks.

That depends. Do you have **** for brains ? If yes, then by all
means go fish. If not, ... well wait a minute, if you DIDN'T
have **** for brains you wouldn't even have bothered to ask.

There is some mention of fly fishing Central Park in here:

Believe it or not, there are some specific rules for fishing NYC park waters
which includes Central Park.
Only barbless hooks are permitted, and it's all C&R.
I also believe that no lead weights are permitted.

Uh, I hate to agree with Fortenberry but I think he's got the right
idea this time. Does your wife's idea of romance include a 4wt? I
guess that it's a possibility, but I'd wager that when your wife says
that whe wants to spend a "romantic day in the park" that she didn't
think that you'd be bringing along your fly rod...

Here's an idea for you: spend the day with your wife! Pay as much
attention to her as you would the water, your casting, mending, fly
selection, presentation and every other aspect of fly fishing. I'll
bet you dollars to doughnuts that she'd appreciate it more than you
might imagine. Share a giant pretzel. Stop by a playground area.
Sit on a bench. Get caught in the rain. Do *not* behave like you
wish you were fishing.

If you happen by a pond in the park and some guy is fly fishing, don't
even mention it. Don't even give him a second glance. Keep on
strollin' and talking to you wife--and not about fishing!

The good news is that nothing in the above indicates......or even
hints......that you agree with Kennie about anything. Welcome to the human

I've flyfished both the water around 79th street, where they rent the
rowboats, and the Harlem Meer. Caught small bass in both places.
Generally worked the southwest shores of each body of water, with good
results.

It's about what you'd expect: more novelty than for actual quality
fishing. But then again, I'm not a big fan of still water fly
fishing, regardless of the location...

Fly Fisherman, or maybe FR&R did a story about fishing in Central Park
in the mid 90s. The article covered the Harlem Meer and finished with
Striper fishing in the East River, IIRC. The author, a regular on the
Hudson, claimed to have seen corpses floating by. Definitely a new
definition of combat fishing.

Stripers in the Hudson or East Rivers -- Now that's fishing !

This is the right time of year as well.

Ok, ok, I admit it, I was kidding around about fishing in Central
Park. Although, after looking at a few websites, I may consider giving
it a shot someday.

I'd say my presentation was perfect. It took Ken less than 10 minutes
to swallow that one. By the way Ken, the pictures of my friends
newborn son in the fishing vest came out great.

On a trip from UK we spent a Sunday morning in Central Park. A
competent caster was fishing - did not see any takes.
Simple statistics show that people fly-fish in Central Park every day of
the year
