I went to Unity L. yesterday with my neighbor & his 12 yr old. Thruogh out
my back starting the snowmobile. Toughed it out and went anyway cause dad
took the kid out of school to go fishing. It was really a nice day, light
wind 40* , mostly clouds but then you could see the sun comming up the lake,
just a great day to fish. We set up near a 5' hump in 20' . the ice was 32"
thick. We fished most of the day. The three of us caught 2 dozen crappies,
the 5 largest were about 2 pounds ea the rest were 1-11/2 lb . Calvin sr got
a 15" smallie & a 2 lb Large. I iced a 20 1 1/2 " Large & a 23 1 1/2 with a
18" girth. No scales , no camara and I realeased the big momma.
How much would a largmouth that big weigh? I guessed around 7 pounds & 5
pounds. In these northern Maine waters spawnning time is June and if caught
in May I would guess that she might weigh another pound or two when her eggs
ripened.
What an awsome fish that was. About a half hour later I steped in a 10"
auger hole & went in up to my crotch. COLD wet foot. Went home. BTW we jiged
most crappie & bass using short ice rods with a Swedish Pimple tiped w/ a
half of a shinner. Jigging on the bottom in 20 feet deep.

Is that the same as Unity Pond or are we talking about 2 different
waters? Map 21 Delorme (but my Delorme is 16 years old)

Cool...I'm near Bucksport. From the sound of it that may be worth
checking out. Glad to hear your quick dip didn't turn out tragic

It was a great day . Lots of stories to tell. The only tragedy is my back
still aches.
After I got wet we picked up right away& I asked Cal to put his basket on
top to cover a jig hole so no one else would step in. The last thing was to
pack his basket , Cal picked up the basket , took one step , yep , into the
hole, but stopped short of going over his boot. Ha ha . Just think, we had
all this fun without any beer.
I was looking at some early posts & correct me if I'm wrong, but are you new
to winter fishing?
