Anyone have anything positive, negative, or neutral to say about trolling
motors with the built in universal transducers?

I'm going to be replacing my Motorguide 43# motor with a Minn Kota Maxxum
65# 24v motor, and was thinking about getting the model with the universal
sonar, and I know theres someone here with one similar.

Opinions?

For years I ran a Pinpoint trolling motor and locators. While it's not
universal sonar, it is similar in the fact that the transducer is built into
the lower unit of the motor. It was very nice to NOT have to dink around
stringing cables, fooling with hoseclamps and knocking the transducer off
kilter in shallow water.

I went to the Pinpoint and really liked it until I started having problems
and found out it had limitations that they don't tell you about. Mercury,
who owns Motorguide who makes Pinpoint gave me the runaround. Cabelas came
to my rescue. I now have a 65lb Minnkota with the Universal sonar hooked to
a Lowrance X97. The only problem I am having is I often hear a clicking
sound coming from the head of the trolling motor. It is definitely the
Lowrance pinging that I'm hearing. Minkota was no help and gave me a BS
answer. I took the top off, rerouted the cable and ty wrapped it in place,
but haven't been back out since I did that. Hopefully tomorrow. Other than
that, no problems.

That sounds normal to me... I can sometimes hear the Garmin pinging on the
back of my boat, and didn't think anything of it. If I think it's scaring
fish... I'll just turn it off.

Charles,
Hopefully this will get through my firewall.........
I have been runnning the MinnKota Maxxum 74 with built in sonar for over
a year and I can tell you, that with my Hummingbird Legend 300 it works
great. When I had the Motorguide with the external sonar, I broke about
3 tranducers in 4 years (not to mention numerous motor problems). Good
luck with the MK!!

I was able to eliminate just about all the clicking noise by rerouting the
cable to the xducer in the head of the Minnkota. There is a connector in
there and I suspect it is leaking RFI of some sort. I'm going to try to
shield it with a grounded piece of tinfoil.
