I was fishing Belton Lake from a 22 foot pontoon in a large area of sunken
trees. Had a small Abu Garcia Bait Caster with 12 lb competition line. Had
my 5 year old daughter with me and the wife. Daughter was fishing with her
snoopy rod and caught a 3 pound cat. All of a sudden got a strong tug on the
line and the fish started swimming away with it. I worked the fish out of
the area of trees and into the open and the fish took off. Amazingly, it
didnt break the line, especially since thier is no stretching on comp line.
With a little help from the motor, the fish dragged the boat around for half
an hour, I couldnt get it up to the top or near the boat. All the line was
run off. Finally the line slacked and I started to reel in. MOre tension on
the line but I was able to drive the boat towards the line and reel in.
Slowly the fish started surfacing and I saw the largest cat I had ever
caught. Not the largest I had ever seen, have seen some pretty big ones from
the guys hand fishing down here in MS and in Louisiana before I lived in
Texas but big. I would guesstimate at well over 100 lbs. I didnt even
attempt to bring him into the boat, just pulled it near and took the tip of
the rod, got my hook out and let em go. The "Bait" I was using was a bright
red rubber worm on a Texas rig.
