*southern california sal****er reports
catalina island:* yellowtail were popping up front and back of the
island this week, with the larger 15-pound plus yellowtail in the back.
water temperature in the channel was 65.5 degrees. but they were on the
move and hard for most boats to run them down. however the calico bass
were very good depending on if you hit the right kelp bed, the
\"caliber\" reported 133 calico bass among 18 anglers. with all the
bait in the water, and the warm waters we’ve been having the makos are
sure to be near. so if you love shark fishing this is the perfect time
for them, and many charters will start running night and day shark
trips. most landings are impatiently awaiting the arrival of the
barries (barracuda) but very few have been taken thus far.
*-sport king --* 11 barracuda, 27 bonito, 85 calico bass, 5 blue
perch, 26 opaleye perch, 5 sheephead, 35 rockfish and 41 bocaccio.

*-gail force-* - 26 bonito, 2 barracuda, 61 calico bass, 1 halibut
(25 anglers)
*-first string - -*10 yellowtail, 1 white seabass, 191 calico bass,
11 barracuda, 23 sheephead, and 3 halibut. (25 anglers).
*-thunderbird - -*125 calico bass, 62 whitefish, 35 sheephead, 3
barracuda, and 20 rockfish (25 anglers)
*phantom -* 5 yellowtail, 6 white seabass (6 anglers)
*seasons first swordfish: *this honor goes to jim korona, the owner of
the 42-foot sea ray \"come monday\" out of huntington harbour. jim said
they were down at dana point saturday for bass but got nothing, so they
put out some chum to catch mackerel outside dana to got to the 14 for
some shark fishing. when they were 9 off the point they saw a swordie
scratching along. so they tried a slow troll but couldn’t get the bait
in front of the fish. then they tried cutting engines and generators
and sliding in for a cast, on the eigth cast the swordie bit jim’s live
mackerel. after and hur and 10 minute battle the fish was brought
aboard, the broadbill weighed 142 pounds at avalon.
*shark fishing:* shark fishing has been good and will continue to
improve with the warmer waters we are having. la jolla produced several
thresher sharks, with the hotspot being around the scripps weather bouy
outside of the upper middle part of la jolla. the private boat \"miss
saigon\" caught a thresher near 300 pounds on saturday and followed up
with a 140 pound on sunday.
*barracuda:* santa monica bay was the hotspot for a wfo on the
barracuda bite saturday. the \"new del mar\" reported having 100+
barracuda onboard and the \"tortuga\" and \"r&r\" both got limits,
bigger size in the 5-8 pound range with a few 10 pounders.
*san diego sportfishing:* the sportfishing season in san diego still
continues its rocky start, as overnight runs continue to turn to
rockfish to fill the sacks when island trips find very few surface
biters. the \"legend\" on a 1 1/2 day trip only reported 4 yellowtail
for 29 anglers, now thats a sad report. the \"voyager\" still continues
to try to entice anglers by providing calico bass action instead,
saturday they reported 8 anglers to 64 calico bass. the angler counts
for seaforth landing have continued to decline as more anglers are
showing up at h&m landing and point loma sportfishing. the \"islandia\"
located right next to \"seaforth landing\" is reporting more anglers
per boat also. this could be due to the fact that more of the
\"seaforth landing\" boats are fishing calicos and rockfish to try and
fill bags, and anglers are wanting a better variety.
