I'm looking at a used 1996 Evinrude 40 hp outboard motor. From the address of
the seller I'm guessing it has had at least some salt water use. Anything I
sould look for in particular?
Thanks,
Dave

Hi Dave, on an engine that age - if you believe it has been is salt
water it might be worth your time to pull the head and see how much
crud is in the water jacket. If not too bad it can be flushed out.
This would be a good way to confirm how much sal****er use and how
well it was or was not flushed with fresh water after use.
If you end up buying the engine replace the impeller if no record of
it being done in the past year.
Check the drive oil and run a compression test. That should cover the
big stuff.
Try to get the seller to sign off on a letter saying he/she knows of
no problems and the drive works fine.
Hope this helps, Dale
