Hello:

Was wondering if Jack Smola has ever published the book on the Deerfield
River that I believe was to be out last year ?

Couldn't find any information, anywhere regarding it ?

Any others ?

B.

try emailing him

His website seems to be down so if the email doesn't work you could also
call him at 860-763-1756

It may be one of those "best laid schemes" thingies, coupled with fly-fisher
ADD. Jack's been known to suffer from both. ;-) He's usually at the fly
fishing shows (especially Marlboro/Marlborough MA), so if he's got it done,
he'll be peddling it.

Last time I saw Jack, his video on the Deerfield had just been released. I
don't know about the book (I haven't seen him in a while and don't expect
to). Lou's advice to try emailing him won't help. In all the years I've
known Jack, he's never read an email, even though he had the link on his web
site. His son (I think) used to check it occasionally and print them out.
His web site has been down for over a year. The most recent phone number I
have for him is 860 763 1856.

There are other alternatives for info. Tom Fuller's book (the one on
southern New England I think has coverage of the Deerfield) is generally
good, but doesn't have any really new info - seems to all be culled from
other sources. It is accurate though. The Mass/RI Council of TU had a book
out in the 80s (about fishing all of Massachusetts). It's out of print but
I have about a dozen copies in storage and could let one go for a fair bid
(all money goes to Pioneer Valley Chapter of TU). They originally sold for
$15 but I can't let them go for less than $20. I'm preparing to put some up
on EBay and we're auctioning the rest this Spring. There's a new edition of
that book coming out early next year (it's been coming out 'real soon now'
for 3 or 4 years).

The best advice I can give you about the Deerfield is to make sure to call
the power company's hotline to find out about the water release schedule.
And don't trust what they tell you. Be prepared for rapid big level
changes.
