Everyone Enjoys Christmas in Poland Except The Carp

Save the carp
Polskie Radio

The plight of hundreds of thousands carp, which are a
must in the traditional Polish Christmas menu, is a jarring note in
the merry atmosphere of the holiday. Or at least that's what animal
rights campaigners here are striving to make the average carp
consumer realize. KK has more on the actions to spare the carp
unnecessary suffering.

Report by Krysia Kolosowska

A friend of mine and her little son went shopping in a
supermarket and returned in shock after they saw a tank full of carp.
The fish were gasping for air, their fins appeared to have been
cut, their bodies were bruised. That's a typical sight in Poland in
the run-up to Christmas, when fried, boiled or baked carp is
traditionally eaten. One can hardly expect to change this tradition but

there is a lot each and every one of us can do to help the carp –
say Polish animal rights campaigners. What is happening to the carp
is actually a violation of the law on the prevention of cruelty to
animals, says Barbara Romanowicz, a volunteer working for the Gaja
greens Club.
As in previous years, the Gaja Club has organized the
"Free the carp" campaign. The idea is to buy live carp
and
free them in lakes.

Gaja Club organized its action on December 12th. On
December 20th, a similar campaign will be staged by the
Empathy Association. Animal rights campaigners are encouraging
Poles to buy carp that is already dead, never allow live fish to be
packed in
plastic foil, in which they suffer a slow death through suffocation, to

pay attention how carp are kept in shops and react if they see
anything wrong. That's the least that we can do to help.
