You're as young as you feel, Scott. ;-)

A female friend of mine and I were discussing how you always think of
yourself as being much younger than others your age. She had an experience
where she went into the dentist and recognized the dentist's name on his
sheepskin as being in the same graduating class. When he came in she said,
"You were in my class in school", to which he replied, "Oh. What did you
teach?"

Happy birthday. Not much going on can be a good thing. At my 40th paty, #1
son fell of a slide & broke his arm.

Flanken is easy.

Beef Short Ribs
Soup Bones
2 Packs Manischevitz Split Pea Soup
I add some extra barley

Follow the directions on the soup, just put the short ribs and and bones
in. Cook until the ribs are falling off the bones
Serve with LOTS of strong horseradish.

However-- I also convinced her to make me Kasha Varnishes from scratch!!
My parrot goes absolutely nuts for the Kasha--its his favorite thing in
the world, even better than kumquats.

I guess what I meant is that the recipes don't account for the 'some' in
extra barley, nor the 'lots' of horseradish. Of course I can follow the
basics, but it's the intangibles that make up the "Grandmother Effect" on a
recipe. Someone who has made it a certain way for many years, probably
taught by her grandmother to make it a certain way, etc. A certain flavor
can be manipulated by a little more of this, or less of that.

I grew up an Irish Catholic in the Chicago 'burbs, so I had little exposure
until mebbe 10 years ago. A friend of mine invited me to share the Seder
with his family, and I've loved traditional Jewish foods since.

There's a restaurant in Chicago called Shallot's. Outstanding Kosher food.
The Matzo ball soup is beyond good. I've managed to drag SWMBO there a
coupla times. Hoping for a coupla more...

I've never heard it called "making flanken" before:) What a great

Happy Birthday Scott! I'm only a couple months away from 40 myself... I
still feel about 18 until I look in the mirror. :(

I agree, one of my favorite childhood memories was playing outside in the
snow, sledding, ice skating on the lake, etc... When frost bite had nearly
set in, going inside the warm cabin to the smell of my Grandmas home made
chili cooking... She left us a couple years ago and unfortunately I never
made a batch of chili with her to see what little secrets she added to
making it taste so good. My Mom continues to cook the same chili from
Grandmas recipe, however it doesn't quite taste the same... She obviously
put a little of "this" and "some" of that in the chili that didn't make it
to the recipe card...

Happy New Year,
JT

i really didn't mind 40, as thirty-something trial lawyers are fresh
meat for arrogant pro-right judges; and 50 was fine, because i hadn't yet
"hit the wall", and swmbo was lookin' mighty fine, and pre-menopausal, to
boot. but 60 was a freakin' *bear*, complete with mortality reality,
failing vision, and a lifestyle centered around fisher's bar and grill.

Happy B-day Scott! I just had my 47th on the 19th. I got a real nice pink,
inflatable tu-tu with faux gold lamay trim, for accent, from my sister
in-law. I'll be wearing it while I do the Polar Plunge this year for
Special Olympics.

If anyone has an actual size 42 pink tu-tu, that they want to sell, give me
a ping, as I gotta figure on something to wear next year, should I not drown
this year.

Well, if you have a minute I would like to crack a pint of Jim Beam and
speak to you about post-menopausal sex, the aches and pains of age . . . and
maybe I can pry a little free legal advice out of you.

....just kidding about the advice...I'll pay.

I figure there will be lots of photos, possibly even a news report from MTN
(Mountain Television Network). Boone's own TV station, ya know!

I post pics to a.b.p.f., if I don't drown, of course.

Agreed!! Let me pin down all the dates for the Spring. Our annual
Beaverkill trip is becoming quite the hooplah, and the deep fried French
Toast at the Roscoe Diner is, in fact, almost worth losing the arteries it
will clog.

Eatern European peasant food is Eastern European peasant food!

You're gonna go pretty hungry if you start looking for leftovers of this
particular meal at my place! It went well. We scored the strongest
bottled horseradish I can recall. Altman's, I think it was.

Thanks, Scott. Maybe we could hit the restaurant in Caledonia sometime
this spring instead ? I'll buy lunch.... (haven't had a chance to do
much

Drove by the Roscoe Diner last week, felt a heart attack comin'

I wonder what things will look like around there after NYS

Sounds like a date!! I think that restaurant has some coupons in this
year's Entertainment book, even. It'll give me a chance to give you the
