View Full Version : Ugly Fly

About a year ago, my mom was visiting and asked for a demononstration on fly
tying. I grabbed the first scraps I found on my desk and tied this. Size 8
Mustad 3261, peacock for the tail and body, metallic silver thread, and
small black mono eyes. I had no intention of using it, but it ended up in
one of my boxes anyway. The rainbows and brookies loved it. Could anyone
tell me why fish might like this monstrosity? I don't even know what it
could be classified as. It floats like a dry until it gets chewed, then
fishes almost like a wet. Any thoughts?

Tadpole ? But who knows what a fish "thinks".

Tie it with soft peacock butt hackle and it will be a great lake-fishing
fly, if it isn't already. Damsel fly imitation.

Tadpoles and damsels, hadn't thought of either one of those. I suppose it
would depend on what type/body of water it was fished. Trout season opens
here (MI, on type 4 streams) the last Sat of April. Until then, maybe I'll
go pester some bluegills with it and see what happens. Thanks for the input
guys.

I've flies that look like that with white and brown. Maybe you just found a
better color.

I wouldn't say better colors. This fly was not thought out before it was
tied, just a few scraps that were left on my desk. The hackle does have some
white and brown in it, I can't remember what I might have pulled the feather
out of. IAC, the local rainbows here do seem to like it at times. As I have
not had the opportunity to travel/fish outside western MI, I can't say from
experience if it would be any good elsewhere.

"Could anyone tell me why fish might like this monstrosity?"

It is the peacock herl. Fish can't resist it. One of my favorite garbage
flies is a light tinsel body wrap and a few long pieces of herl positioned
as hackle. I suppose it looks like a big furry spider but the fish just
simply mob and maul it.
