View Full Version : A trip to the Local

.....the Local trickle, that semi-unknown trout stream very near my home.
Saturday
was a fine day, and the wife and I took a walk by the creek, with the dog.
There have been some heavy things to deal with of late, so that in itself was
theraputic, enhanced by the sight of trout, a lot of them! It seems the state
had a few leftover fish, and the fall stocking in the lower end of the Creek
was heavy. Further, the substantial rains lowered the stress on the natives,
and their survival was good. Evidence of the vastly improved water table were
two small springs flowing well, in places where I had never noticed any water
flow. Being the good spouse, I was carrying no tackle whatsoever, but did make
a mental note to set the alarm early on Sunday.
Today's short(3 hour) visit showed some very skittish fish after the
post-stocking onslaught(they stocked 5 days ago, I hear). Still, I managed one
native and one stocked fish on Ausable Wulffs, one more native and one largish
shiner on snowshoe caddis. Casts had to be from the brush, or in open areas,
from 10 feet back on the bank. Otherwise, all you saw were fleeing fish. One
fish per pool, and you couldn't even sneak back and interest fish after a
goodly wait. Fish were generally in the fast chutes leading into little pockets
and pools.
Challenging fishing, to be sure, but damn fine weather, some leaves getting
colorful. Set a good tone for the whole day......afterwards the Pats won, and
it looks like the Sox might get a really well timed rainout!

It's a pretty little stream. The only time I fished it, the water was very
low. I'd love to try it again after this past season of decent rain.
