This Thursday night in the Central Valley on KVIE Public Television there
will be a special on the spill:
Thursday, October 23
8:00-9:00 PM
River That Never Was
It's the story of the deadly Cantara toxic spill in Dunsmuir, CA north of
Sacramento on Interstate 5. On July 31, 2003, five rail cars plunge into the
Sacramento River near Dunsmuir....just 2 miles from the site of a 1991 toxic
spill that destroyed all life in a 38-mile stretch of river above Shasta
Dam, creating the deadliest inland toxic spill in California history. Fears
resurface in river communities exposed to toxic chemicals released in the
1991 spill. Those fears can be understood. This special looks at the effects
of the 1991 toxic kill on the Sacramento River and the people who lived
along its banks. Crews documented the environmental disaster for over a
decade.
