Last night, as I went through another couple hours of sorting tying
materials, as is the case after one of those tying frenzies, I was
quite pleased with myself for the reorganization effort of all that
stuff.

One problem. I left my tying office door open. ******* Beagle....
In the office was a neat pile of fur and feathers about two feet in
diameter. How the heck that dog plucked all those feathers and fur,
I'll never know. All the hides/skins were consumed along with all the
smaller cape hackles. At least I will be able to sort a bunch of ABC
(already been chewed) hackle into baggies.....

Losses include:
One premium elk rump patch - Fly Fishing Shop
One #1 cape - grizzly - Cabela's
One beautiful Wapsi grizzly cock saddle patch, brown - Barlow's
One dry fly grizzly cape - Bass Pro

Lesson learned:
None, this was not the first time

Resolution:
One 11 year old fat, lazy Beagle for sale - AKC - gonads not included

Any Takers?

So, when will you be here RW? If you come week after next, you can
provide your doggy services and then we can drive to Missouri where I
found a couple of trout spots we could fish in the evenings.

Sounds like you will have plenty of beagle hair. Create a new fly called the
"skinned beagle hair"

I've been to Dallas. My second earliest memories are of living in a
trailer park in Ft. Worth circa 1950, catching horny toads and trying to
deal with the retarded neighbor kid who would repeat everything I said.
(My earliest memories are of Synder, TX -- tornados and oil rigs and
railroad tracks, mostly, and the occasional rodeo.) In the 80s I spent
an entire week at a hotel in the Dallas/Ft. Worth airport at a DARPA
conference. My God. That was real bad.

No thanks. Frankly, I wish Texas would secede. Then we could build a
fence on the LA, OK, NM border.

I forgot the AK border. Maybe we can keep that open, but heavily
policed. No politicians, crooked businessmen, or beauty queens allowed
in. And the Dallas ****ing Cowboys can start their own damn league, but
they'll have to stop calling themselves America's Team.

Oops. Mean AR for Arkansas. AK is Alaska, of course. We'll keep AK, if
only for the fishing, if not for their crazy-ass politics.

Phony baloney fisheries and a goddamn abomination is what they are.
They put those friggin' dams in and absolutely ruined miles upon
miles of some of the finest smallmouth streams on the whole planet.

Ken & RW,
I appreciate your opinions. Texas is a Hell Hole for a trout
fisherman. I am jealous everytime a think of RW and what he sees out
of his windows every morning he awakes.
You, Ken live somwhere up north of me 800 or 1000 miles and have the
beauty of lakes and freeflowing rivers. Try being me who looks out on
a sea of roofs and fight some of the worst traffic in the world. It
costs me a minimum of $1000 just to think about trout fishing anywhere
but Arkansas, and, that is a 500 mile drive to the quality trout. I am
sorry about the dams but it made one hell of a trout fishery. Sorry
about the smallmouth. There are still a ton of quality smallmouth
waters in AR. I look forward to fishing with you guys but, kiss my
butt.

I don't know if still is, but Austin's TU chapter used to be the largest in the
US (by something like triple the next largest chapter)....I guess it was the
stocking at Granbury that did it...OTOH, I think the Austin Angler went belly
up, so...???

Seriously, though, the Hill County, and really, much of the eastern half of
Texas, has some pretty damned good fishing, fly or otherwise, albeit no even
half-assed trout fishing (...and no, those stockers don't count...)

Poor trout fishing is the least of my objections to Texas.

Richard,
I have some acreage in Kerrville and hope to build my final home there
in the next few years. I am doing the architecturals now. It is
beautiful in the Hill Country as far as beauty goes in Texas. It is
more of a state of mind we will be moving to. The Guadalupe is only an
hour away and has some good trout supported by the State, Austin
Anglers, and I believe TU. The local GRTU is the largest chapter is
the US. Go figure.
Alot of good warm water fly fishing in the Hill Country and the coast
is just 3 hours away.

The Guadalupe River TU chapter is the largest.

Yep. I happened to drop by there a couple of weeks before they had
their going out of business sale, and it was pretty obvious they
weren't doing well. Trout fishing is still going strong on the
Guadalupe, but they couldn't compete with the Interweb thingie.

> Seriously, though, the Hill County, and really, much of the eastern half of

Our problem now is simply a lack of water. I don't even go to my
favorite spots because it makes me almost sick to my stomach to see
how low the rivers are. There are some spring-fed streams that are
(barely) holding their own, but the Pedernales and Blanco are not even
running in most of the spots I used to fish.

Ironically, because of an agreement between the Guadalupe River TU
chapter and the river authority, the lower Guad is holding up better
than most, as they continue to release water from Canyon dam (even
while the lake dries up to nothing). The agreement stipulated that
they would keep the flow at 200 cfs or higher year-round, and due to
the drought, they've had to cut back, but as I'm typing this, the
release rate shows as 61 cfs. (Contrast that to the Pedernales at
Johnson City which is flowing at 1.2; median for this time of year is
about 50.)

As for the comments about Texas in general -- it's all about what
you make of it. Austin is one of the nicer towns anywhere. At least
it was until all the northerners and Californians moved in. (It cuts
both ways, boys.) The Hill Country where I live is beautiful, and the
people are friendly.

Yes, there are plenty of assholes, and our politicians are idiots,
but I'd say the same goes for most places.

For our two most vocal anti-Texas friends I have a couple of
questions:

Are all Illernoise politicians like your governor?

Are all Idahoans wacko racist survivalists?
