Bait Runner Reels?

Hi
Having been away from fishing equip in a while, I was wondering if someone
could explain (or lead me to a site) how these spinning reels are "bait
runners"? I see various makers, swtarting with Shimano selling these.
Do they permit free run of line by wsay of free spooling? If so, how do you
engage it when you want to set the hook?
Is there something about the placement of the drag controls?

There are 2 drags. light one for when the bait is out, and the bail is
closed so the line does not fall off. Some of the reels, kick out the bair
runner feature and you go to the front big drag when you turn the handle.
Others you have to flip the switch to get it out of BR mode.

I have a couple of these reels (Shimono 3500 and 4500) and although I
like them I think they are a little over priced for what you get. I
bought them for fish that pick up the bait and move off a little before
taking the bait all the way in their mouth. I would consider them kind
of like a bait casting reel with a clicker only not very loud and your
attention is required all the time. They are handy when fishing for
something flathead catfish on the bank and you don't want to see your
rod and reel skimming over the surface of the water.

have a look on the some carp fishing web site here in the uk, we use baitrunners for most of the
carp. there is a reel out made by cormorant(spelt bad) that has an alarm built in to it that
bleeps when the BR is set and the spool starts to spin. don't know if it is any good to you but
one never knows.
