As I begin planning to tie up some Christmas gifts for some of my fellow fly
fishermen, I am having a hard time deciding what to tie.
IF you all would be so kind as to give me a list of your 20 favourite flies,
10 for trout, 10 for bass/panfish.
My friends and I are primarily wet fly fishermen, but I would love to hear
some dry fly ideas as well.
BE creative, you can list your favourite flies to tie, or your favourite to
fish, or both!
I am looking forward to seeing all of your Christmas fly lists, I plan on
tying 10 or 12 different flies and inserting them in a nice little flybox.

I'm sure many people will give you lists of wimpy trout flies, so I'll
concentrate on bluegill/bass flies.
It's hard to beat the general purpose wooly bugger. Tie it in small, medium
and large lengths in a variety of colors, with and without beads. You can't
go wrong with olive of black, but purple, red, yellow, chartreuse will all
work, and using a contrasting hackle, ribbing, krystal flash, legs, etc.
give you a pretty endless assortment to work with.
For top water, there's the ever popular poppers, sliders, and spiders. See

The same flies tied big are good for bass. When in doubt, try a gurgler.
If I had a box of those (and I *do*) I could catch bluegills all day long.

I won't chime in on the trout aspect as I really don't have a "Fav" trout
fly. Fish a lot of Adams' dries and hare's ear nymphs so I guess they could
qualify. Same with Elk Hair caddis and Red Fox Squirrel nymph. For
bass/panfish its a different matter. In no particular order, here are the
flies I wouldn't be without:
- Tap's Deer Hair Bug, red face white body and tail
-Dahlberg Diver, natural deer hair, gold tail
- Adam's Dry, size 12
- Assam Dragon, size 8
- Olive Wooly Bugger, size 4 to 12
- Whitlock Sheep Shad, size 4
- Black Nosed Dace streamer, size 6
- Muddler Minnow and/or Zoo Cougar, size 4 to 8
- Mickey Finn Streamer, size 6
- Partridge and green soft hackle, size 12
- Ballou Special streamer, size 4 to 8
- Byrd Gill Buster, size 10 and 12

Trout flies only for me:
Dries:
Elk Hair Caddis
X-caddis
Usual (different colors & sizes)
Adams
Wets:
Hare's Ear & Partridge soft hackle
Nymphs:
Pheasant Tail
Hare's Ear
Prince
Sparkle Pupa
Streamers;
Wooly Bugger (Olive, Brown & Black)
Grey Ghost
OK, so that's 11 instead of 10, and that doesn't include midges or
terrestrials. Consider this a very basic list. On the other hand, if you really
want to go minimalist, here's three patterns that will catch fish all year:
1. Olive Wooly Bugger - sizes 14 thru 4
2. Usual - sizes 20 thru 10
3. Pheasant Tail Nymph - sizes 18 thru 10
Happy Tying

Trout:
Klinkhamers in various sizes and colors.
Pass Lakes in both dry and wet styles.
Scuds, I did really well with a pink one with flouresnt pink ribbing late this
season, but I usually tie and fish tans and grays.
Adams, (of course) standard and parachute.
Red Quills (of course).
March Browns tied Catskill style.
Gold Ribbed Hares Ear nymphs.
Soft hackle wets in various sizes and colors.

Snowshoe Hare winged BWOs size 20 and smaller.
Bass:
Dahlberg Divers in various colors. Sizes 2-6. Brown with a red nose is my most
dependable but wouldn't be without a few in chartreuse.
Wooly Buggers in black, olive, brown, chartreuse and white or combinations there
of.
Lead Eyed Bunny Leeches in natural, black and olive. Sizes 2-4.
Clouser Minnows sizes 2-6.
That's about it.That probably covers the flies I fish 90% of the time.
