Saltchuck fans,

Hi. Would it be a really bad thing (tm) to use a freshwater
baitcasting rod and reel for some surf and pier fishing if I rinse it
off after each use? I'm new to sal****er and (just having moved)
haven't got lots of $$ to changeover from my freshwater gear. Also
what shoes should I use with my waders (will my Hodgeman shoes
disinigrate immediately? :-O ). Thanks for any advice and or pointers
to "sal****er fishing for dummies" sites you can send me.

Regards,
Bill (boatless in Virginia Beach)

Bill,

I was like you when I started out. Everything I had came from Wal-Mart.
From my experience don't use anything like a Zebco 33 or it will fall apart.
I still have many Wal-Mart specials that I use for both freshwater and
sal****er. I always rinse them well regardless of what type of water I
fished in. Since I been doing this for several years now, I gradually
purchased better quality reels and rods specifically for sal****er. I still
rinse these down when I get home. I even rinse the ones I don't use to make
sure I wash any dirt, sand or salt it may have contacted. If I was you, I
would not rush out and spend a lot of money on new gear until you see if you
truly like sal****er fishing, especially surf or wade fishing. I still have
some of the spincast I started out with 20 years ago and they still work.
Once a year, I take them down and clean them and reassemble with proper
lubrication and grease.

I typically don't surf or wade fish since I have a boat but when I do I
always wear old tennis shoes and long pants. Some people buy neoprene
waders and shoes. Biggest concern I always had was stepping on a stingray.
I was told to shuffle and not step. This will help you avoid stepping on
one.

Not a problem. We on the West Coast use black bass outfits for fishing
shallow water rockcod. Just freshwater rinse and spray inside and outside
once in a while with CorrosionX. ReelX works also, but CorrosionX is
cheaper.

You can certainly use a fresh water rig, just rinse it really well
after use and be user to keep it lubed like CB and licker said.
Eventually as you get used to sal****er shore fishing, you will pick
up new stuff as you go along. Just don't expect the reels to look
nice after exposure to a few times to salt water.

As to the waders, get a pair of Converse "Red Ball" canvas sneakers -
I don't do a lot of shore fishing, but I have a pair of stocking foot
waders I use with them and they work great.

Just out of curiosity, right or left coast?

Right coast - I just moved to Virginia. Thanks for all the advice! I
hope to try my luck before long here - I found a huge plug on the
beach today (woohoo - free gear!).

You didn't say what type of freshwater reel ... I use Penn
310-320-330's Big Drag ..but I also use abu-c3 and a abu 7000 c3 and older
mitchel 300 ,408 and that has been for years..not just a few times...But ! I
wash them at the dock before I leave with a gallon jug of water and I
wash them after I get home in the shower when I take one..a little cleaning
and grease/light oil
I have never...I repeat had to get any reels fixed other than drag wasers
for the penn squidder (10 years old) and a dog/worm for abu 7000 2
years...the 16 or so mitchells
needed just 2 bail springs. I fish from 2 to 20 hrs or more every week.
Some reels that have titanium seem to
not like salt water so watch that angle..
