I just got a 19'8" Sea Fox center console boat. It has a 115 Mercury
4-stroke engine with a 60 gallon tank. It is the 197 model here:

I was wondering how far off shore can I go and fish in this boat safely.

Depends on weather, tide and other factors. Personally, I wouldn't go
offshore with less than a full 90 gallon tank (70 Yamaha 2 stroke, 20ft
Quintrex Challenger). If it blows up (offshore wind and an ebbing tide,
the amount of fuel that you use when having to slow down, increases
enormously.

Good luck and may your bait be scared.

I live on the gulf of mexico, generally not a rough body of water. I've been
out 2 miles with guy in a 16' aluminum v bottom and felt safe the entire
time. It was a nice calm day. Most of the fishing sites are within 5 miles
of the pass, and ten miles from my house. I was just looking for what others
thoughts would be on using a boat like mine for off shore fishing. I've seen
many smaller vessles out there.

Florida right?

East/West coast I wouldn't venture much more than ten or so out. The
problem down that way is weather - it can pop up quickly and you have
to be really aware of what's going on in a boat like that.

Having said that, you can stretch that, but you will be spending more
time looking at weather, wind and wave action than having fun. 20
feet is a little small for distances like 20 miles out.

I would strongly suggest that you invest in a really good GPS system,
a horn of some type other than the one that comes with the boat, good
life jackets, parachute flares - all the things that can help you get
out of trouble. Also important, a Sea//Tow or BoatUS membership for
emergency tows.

Good luck.

This thread caught my eye. I was just down on the Gulf out of Port
Aransas this past week. Springbreak! We had a 21' with a walk-around
cuddy that we took out about 5 miles. On really good days we have gone
out 30+ miles.

I have a 17 foot boat with 26 gallons of fuel and a 70 hp on the back. I
have been out in the Gulf of Mexico with it several times. I just choose
the days I want to go out when the weather appears to be good. I have been
out there when out of now where a small storm brewed, My boat is not fast
enough to out run or go around some storms. So I make sure my bilge pump is
working and all my safety gear is on board before I venture out there. I
have two GPS for my boat. One unit on the console and one hand held. I
also have a marine radio on the console and a handheld as a backup. I have
had problems once starting the boat while 5 miles offshore and the batteries
were dead. from trying. The hand held worked and I was able to summons a
nearby vessel to tow me in.

In my boat I would not go no more then 5 miles out and pick the days I do.

If you live in Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama, Texas or Florida try
www.rodnreel.com. There is a section called GPS. It will give you
coordinates to rigs and other locations. There is also a trip planner that
will help you determine how far your destinations and about how much fuel
you will burn if you know your GPH.

I have a 20ft 125 two stroke CC with 55 gallon capacity. We've been to the
Steeples of Daytona which is about 40 miles. I'll never do that again. It
takes to frigging long and it wasn't even tuna time. Not we go out no
further than 22 miles. It makes for a nice day.

2-3 foot seas is it and that's when I wake up, anything bigger will get
friskier later on when we come in. If the buoy
(http://www.ndbc.noaa.gov/station_page.phtml?station=41009) off Cape
Canaveral says 3.2 for a period of 8 seconds I go out but anything less on
the seconds will choppy. Winds should be not more than like 12mph.

2-3 is max on the wave action dude, with 5-10 mile an hour winds.

Heh...that's like a perfiect day.
