Hi All:
A friend of mine traded in a 15 hp two stroke for a 20 hp
Honda four stroke, to push around his 14 foot wide body on the French
River (Ontario). He is happy with it except for one thing: it trolls
too fast. He is thinking of putting a trolling plate on this motor
and wonders what the pros and cons might be. Opinions and advise would
be appreciated. Thanks. Ken

Buy or build a drift anchor. One can be made by drilling holes in a 5
gallon plastic bucket and run the rope through the bucket. Tie the rope to
a bridle and attach to the back of the boat while trolling. The drag of the
bucket will slow him down.

How will that waste any more fuel than putting a trolling plate on the outboard? If the motor is
spinning at 500 rpm's and going 3 mph, it's not going to use any more fuel if it's still running at
500 rpms, dragging a bucket and traveling at 1.5 mph.

The only other thing that he might consider is running the motor in reverse and backtrolling. Many
times, a boat will move slower through the water backwards than forward, plus offer the added
advantage of more precise boat control.
