Solution: equip Coast Guard vessels with torpedoes to sink the offending
boats. What they are engaging in is theft, poaching, or could even
be called piracy.

Overfishing is a global concern. Fish stocks in some areas have dropped
so low that scientists are predicting the extinction of some vital
species if severe restrictions aren't imposed and enforced. Humans are
literally raping the oceans, using nets miles long to harvest everything
in one fell swoop. The EU is attempting to ban cod fishing in the North
Sea because the stocks are dangerously low. The fishermen are whining
about the loss of their livlihood, but are so short-sighted that they
can't see they will lose it anyway if the cod go extinct in the 10 years
or so scientists are predicting. Already there are restrictions on
the number of cod they can harvest, and they have been grossly violating
those restrictions for years already. The EU is starting to have to
get really mean, confiscating offenders' boats when they are caught. I
would take it one step further and torpedo the damn things, maybe that
would deter the activity.

Sharks have been under attack for some time now. Shark fin soup is a
delicacy in Asia, and every species the Asians consider a delicacy or
aphrodisiac quickly disappears from existence. The other thing is
that the alternative medicine freaks believe that shark cartilage
prevents and/or cures cancer. Apparently cancer is never seen in
sharks, and since their bodies are made of cartilage instead of bone
like regular fish, it is simply assumed that the cartilage has
something to do with it. When sharks are hunted for shark fin soup,
they are caught, their fins sliced off, then their bodies are
dumped back into the ocean and they quickly die.
