View Full Version : Does anyone make poppers?

I have bluegill fly fishing for many years now, and would not dream of
fishing any other way, except just a change once in a blue moon.
I used to get a popper made in Co. I think and the name of the company or
the popper was Marathon. Does anyone know where and if they are still
around? Maybe someone out there makes a popper like them. I am down to my
last one and sure will be a new adventure this spring without them.
I am in Indiana and flyfish on a lake almost every weekend, so if anyone
knows where I can find the Marathon, please let me know

Thanks

Robert

Don't know where to find the poppers in question, but have you tried making
your own?

Poppers can be made from the closed cell foam found in common sandals (thong
type). Hang some marabout out behind. You can even change colors or stripe
them by using different colors. Push them ontot he hook and glud them
together. Shape the first one to make it "pop". Many fly fishers make simple
ones when fishing for bass. Works great.

Try Bett's TrimGim or Blue Gill Special. Also check out Peck's Poppers in
various colors. My most productive BG bait in recent years is what's called
a gurgler. They are vary simple to tie and you can make them for everything
from bluegills to muskies just by varying the size.

I do like the Blue Gill popper by Betts, the BG Special is an awesome bait.
I don't have time to make my own, but has not been a need either until now
maybe.
I found the Marathon popper was just a notch better than any others I have
tried.
The Dinny by Accardo is a good one also. They also make a Blue Gill Special
which is good.

Thanks
