I have a Garmin hand-held, cost about £100, and find it invaluable for
accurate postioning over my marks.
Also consider it an aid to finding way home in fog.
Have no fiscal interest in promoting this particular manufacturer.

I'm greedy, use a hand held Garmin and a fixed Furuno, check one off against
the other. Seems to work well. Modern technology never ceases to amaze me,
very accurate.

I have made a non commercial web site about fishing boats and their
equipment. I upload reports from owners or users of equipment and their
boats so others can see what the people who use the kit think of them

Peter,

I also use a Garmin hand-held GPS (e-Trek Legend which cost £150 about 2
years ago) that I've checked against a number of charter skipper's GPS
systems and have found it to be very accurate.

At sea, there is always a small variance in positions according to two GPS
systems. This is because non-military GPS signals are deliberately 'fuzzy'
and need to be interpreted by the receiver using an averaging algorithm. I
have found that on average, the variance between two receivers in the same
position is about 35ft.

The only potential problem with a hand held GPS such as my Garmin is that it
has to have a perfectly clear line of sight to the satellites - inside a
cabin it tends to lose the signal. For me that's not a problem - but could
be if it was being used with any GPS software on a laptop inside the
wheelhouse.

One other tip: the manuals often claim that these things are waterproof,
don't trust them, keep it in a resealable plastic bag or if possible, a
proper aquapac case, towsure do a cheaper version:

garmin fishfinder 100, if anyones used one of these are they any good? as
for the gps i have decided to go for a garmin 128 gps.
