I haven't made one but carrying a plank of wood approx. 6 feet long by
1 foot wide and ¾ of an inch thick isn't my idea of fun. I suppose you
could make it out of two 6 foot pieces of inch by inch with a foot
wide piece of 3mm marine plywood across them, that might be lighter,
or two pieces of box aluminium instead of the one by ones. I don't
know how heavy you are but you would have to take that into account as
well. All boats aren't the same beam so it would have to be adjustable
lengthwise too.

I think you may be thinking of a thwart board - a plank which stretches
across from one side of the boat to the other with some means of
stopping it sliding side to side. The MOST important thing to consider
is a decent cushion. It is absolute murder to sit on a plank all day.
A Mini car inner tube makes an excellent cushion and will double as a
life belt if you go over the side.

Assuming you're not talking about adding a thwart - which is a boatbuilder's
job:

The simplest I've seen used no timber but was just a sort of padded,
reverse apron. A cushion with a tape to tie it round the waist and another
(presumably two but I can't remember) to tie it loosely round the thigh and
keep it in place. It had the great advantage that whatever the wearer did it
stayed beneath his backside ready for when he sat down again.

Cheerio,
