Hi...
First post on this news group..
Basically after a break of some 15 yrs from Angling I am back and boy have
got alot to catch up on. The only problem I have is lack of a good fishing
partner or partners .. I know the easiest way is to join the local club but
the yrs joining/subs aren't up for another month or so..So if you live near
Portsmouth drop me a line (scuse the pun) into all sorts of coarse and game
fishing but not sea.

It has not really changed that much really.
You need to present some bait, on a hook, to a fish.
What has changed is the "amount" of money some people are prepared to spend
on the gear to achieve this, and the amount of gear they feel they need.
I am serious, take a good look around a well stocked tackle shop.

I know the feeling, I started again last year after a long break.

Essentials you need.
16 metre pole @ £2,000
Three matched carp rod/reel combos @ £500 each = £1,500
Rod pods, pole rollers, bivvy, expensive (and often useless) brand-name
bait, elastics, spods, pole floats, unhooking mat. Say another £500
Add another £1,000 for other essentials you'll discover you need (camp bed,
sleeping bag, stove, butler, scullery maid).
So £5,000 should see you kitted out.

Of course, you could do it like me.
Hardy Matchmaker rod c1972 @ £16 when new and still as good as new.
Feeder rod @ £35
2 x reel @ £35 each = £70
Another £200 (spread over time) for umbrella, protective clothing and bits &
pieces like hooks, floats and line etc.
Total £315.

Seriously, welcome back to a great art (it's not a sport). I catch enough
fish to keep myself happy, I hope you do too (however much you spend and
whatever 'style' of fishing you adopt). If you are as baffled as I was last
year, you'll be wondering what a spod is. Have fun finding out.

As far as your pricing goes I would say

> 16 metre pole @ £2,000

rubbish

> Three matched carp rod/reel combos @ £500 each = £1,500

rubbish

maybe if you bought them all but i don't no many (infact can't think of any)
that do/have.

once again the pricing is absolute rubbish

So, what was the point of all that then, are you a crack pot or what?

Maybe he was joking?
Just a thought, considering the use of the words 'butler' and 'scullery maid'.

I havent been fishing for a while now and wont get to go as often as i used
to so what im doing is keeping up with the angling world so i dont fall
behind. I get anglers mail each week to keep up with the news and improve
your coarse fishing each month. This way i know whats going on in the
angling world even when i have long spells out. I suggest if you are just
starting back you buy some magazines to see whats happening in the angling
world.

....and then ignore it. (Most of it)

Use your old gear as before, better replace the line though.

The fish haven't changed. The old baits and methods work as well as they
ever did. Get back into the groove and only take on board the wierd and
wonderful additions to the sport as and when you feel the need for them.

Have fun.

Cheerio,
