Farewell Lake Oneida

It's great to be home, hope you guys had a good week.

The BASS Open at Oneida gave me a whole new respect for what the pros
endure. It was downright nasty for 90% of the 6 days I was there, and the
first day of that event was surreal in that the true challenge was just
making it back to the weigh-in safely (not to mention with your boat). Six
boats never did make it back, not including a fire rescue boat that was lost
trying to rescue a fellow pro. Actually catching fish in the 18-35 mph
winds, temps in the 30's & 40's, 4-7+ foot waves, driving rain & ice & (yes,
at times even) lightning was another ordeal entirely, lol.

Missing the cut by 1 pound hurt a little (My day 2 weight was really 11-15,
as called by Mr Fishburne at the weigh-in - but sadly not as recorded on my
ticket and on the Bassmaster site. Guess I'll actually look at my ticket
for now on ;-), but I'm very happy with my experience there for a lot of
reasons.

Thanks again for all the support my rofb buddies have given me this season,
it's truly a pleasure to call you guys friends. Thanks also to my two great
lure sponsors. Gilbert, your dropshot baits put about 30 keeper smallies in
my boat on Day 2 at Oneida. I'm out of them, by the way ;-) Bob (Charles &
Joe too), I used an all chartreuse heavy SW spinnerbait to boat my 18-13
limit of smallies on Day 1 of the Champlain tournament last month. Keep up
the great work you guys, you're going places fellas! Also special thanks to
rofb'er Jack Dalzell for the over-the-phone crash course on smallmouth bass
fishing.

I'll be picking up on my OF.com journal again as soon as I get things here
in order, thanks to all that have been reading it. Sorry for the delay,
I'll pick up where I left off (too long ago). Free time has been short
lately.

Congrats to all that did (& didn't) do well at the Wisconsin gathering, I'm
sure the Huber clan threw a great party as always. I haven't seen the
tournament results but I'll venture to guess that Boom Lake was in rare
form. So, did the field combine for a limit?

Darn, winter is coming...

Oh no it was everything last year was and more, boom did not give up her
babies easy.

I agree with Warren,,,TGIO at Oneida Lake,,I thought I'd never say this but the
Ole saying "A bad day fishing is still better than a good day at work" was not
the case at Oneida,,I would of rather been working!!,, I was up their with
Warren and had 2 other buddys staying with us bring their boats home not
running,, At one time all three boats that stayed at the house we rented was at
the boat motor pool getting work done to them,, If it wasn't for the each one
of us covering each others back during the week,, In all it was a very very
educatiing week to say the least.

Check, check and recheck. It's too bad there was not a system in
place to avoid this type of error from happening.

Keep thinking, "It's only a problem of location".

Warren, I personally think it is only a matter of time before you not
only make the cut, but rank in the number one slot! Keep up the good
work.

I feel ya buddy. I love to fish, but sometimes big water tournaments make
you sit back and think - "Is this worth risking my life?"

Part of you loves the challenge and the fear the nasty conditions add. The
logical part of you says, I have a wife and kids at home, do I really NEED
to take this risk?

I have learned to seriously scout out a bad weather spot that is close to
the launch (15-minutes or less in good weather - so that it maybe only an
hour or less in really bad weather). I look for boat cannels with storm
drain dumping into them, or for smaller feeder creeks that typically come
alive with activity during storms. Yet, are out of the big waves and nasty
cold winds. These spots are my hidden teasures that I never share with
anybody. I'll give anybody GPS way-points to good areas, but I never give
up my bad weather honey holes.

But I wish you the best in your future tournaments!

Once again it was great seeing you Howie! Thanks for rescuing my bathroom
bag. Sorry we only got to fish together for a while in the waves, lol. I'm
glad you introduced me to Sam & George, they're cool guys. What a f'd up
trip.
