View Full Version : Are you Crazy?

Moe Conway

Ok, so maybe I am - lol. Going North for the Winter, that's right I am taking
the season off and going to western NY for the winter. Waterport to be
specific. That's between Buffalo and Rochester on a river that's connected to
Lake Onterio. I have never seen a winter or a white Christmas and as I get
older, figure I'd better do so while I still can. Not to worry, I will be back
in Okeechobee in time for the Southern Classic. No ice fishing for me but any
ROFB'ers in the area, let me know -- I'd love to get a hot cup of coffee with
you. Leaving this weekend and will be back online after I get settled there.
Burrrrr already :)

I lived in northern NY for about 10 years, look for 150 plus inches of
snow..You have to be a little crazy leaving FL to be in NY in the
Winter...There are nice Gander Mountain and Galyans stores near
Rochester..they sell snow shoes and snowmobile suits<g>

Best of luck to ya Moe... hope you have your White Christmas and I'm not
going to call you crazy even though I know better. If you've never had one,
you're in for a treat. Enjoy!

You Northern boys should be loving this. You know exactly what is going to
happen. Moe is going to bring all of that Florida Winter Sunshine up there
with him. Any bets on wheather or not it snows on the Big "O" this year;)

Have a great time up there, and snow isn't all it's cracked up to be..lol...

Dear Moe,

If it's a white winter you want, then you're headed to prime country. Good

I told a buddy of mine, who moved to Tennessee from Syracuse, about your
plans and he said pretty much the same thing. He guessed that you are one of
those people who have to find out for themselves.

Since he's probably right, I may be wasting my time by giving you advice for
surviving a northern winter, but here goes anyway. (Anyone with other good
advice for Moe, chime in....)

1. Don't touch your tongue to the frozen flagpole. Or a fence post. Or a car
bumper. I think you get the gist....

2. Layers, layers, layers. And remember... don't sweat!

3. When snow covers the walks and driveways, don't assume it will just melt
off. Somebody's got to move it.

4. Snow + shovel = heart attack. Grandkids, however, love to shovel snow.
They'd rather do that than go to the mall or movies... almost anything.

5. If you parallel park that nice Chevy truck on the side of the road in
November, be sure to get anything out of it you might need before next
April. That's about the time the mountain of snow deposited over your truck
will melt away enough for you to open the door again.

Have a great winter! Take all your old Bassmasters and catch up on your
reading, and we'll see you in April!

<Anyone with other good advice for Moe, chime in>

If you do shovel your own driveway, there is no point in doing it
several times in the middle of a big storm, as long as you don't have to
go anywhere...just wait til the damn thing blows itself out. Easier to
shovel 12" once than 4" 3 times.

Chuck Coger
October 15th, 2003, 04:46 AM
If you do have to shovel your truck out so you can go to the store etc
(applies to hotels, apartments, street parking).. Make sure you put up a
sign, lawn chair, road spikes or anything that will mark that spot as yours.
No sense in someone else taking your hard earned spot from you after all
your hard work.. and trust me they will, just so they wont have to shovel
there own spot.

Also it helps to shovel *after* the plows run if you can because they will
usually fill you right back in;)

I grew up in Bridgeport CT in the late 40s/early 50s. The city had a 12 term
mayor named Jasper McLevy. He held office from 1933 through 1957, and ran on
the socialist party ticket. His version of socialism was very different from
socialism as we know it, or as Marx envisioned it. He was something of a
fiscal arch-conservative, who believed in minimizing public works and
maximizing self reliance.

All this history for to set up the retelling of his most famous line, which
dealt with snow removal from the city streets. "The Lord put it there,"
McLevy proclaimed, "and the Lord will take it away."

As a lifelong Rochesterian, yeah, I agree, you're crazy. :-) None of my

I had my suspicions all along, Moe, but leaving here to spend the winter in
upstate NY confirms it. Yer nuts! I saw snow once, when I was about 9. Didn't
like it. Don't care if I ever see it again.

Have a great time, and I'm looking forward to hearing how a fellow florida
cracker fairs in sub-zero weather.

It ain't crazy I don't think, let's hope not.
Ya happen too be infected with the fishing bug and a healthy dose of "what's

Our winters can freeze a nun further than she is but my gosh can all those

Our fish buddies take a lot of fishing knowledge, common sense, luck and a
