That's right. My first father-in-law was a WWII aviator in the Pacific.
He was Brigadier General Wilfrid Hollingsworth Stiles USMC(ret) until
the day he died.

Any relation to Gen. William Stiles, USMC (ret), who died a couple of
years back?

I don't think so. Biff had brothers, but none of them survived him.
I suppose William could be a nephew or a cousin of some sort, but I
really don't know. Stiles is a fairly common name in Alabama.

When I left the military, no one continued to call me Commander Quaalude!

It is emblematic of Western culture (and perhaps others as well......though,
I wouldn't know about that) that persons who never did much in the first
place keep their various titles and honorifics upon retirement from a lives
of leisure. People who work for a living never get any.

****ing LIFE OF LEISURE? WHAT THE **** ARE YOU TALKING ABOUT YOU
PIN-HEADED, CHICKEN BITING, BEAR WRASLIN' GEEK? Getting your scrawny ass
shot at, living in buildings that were passed over as crack dens, getting
paid so little that the biggest charity in the US is the military discount,
having to listen to pretty boy college kids say "its been my experience,"
becoming the toy of the week for every friggen politico that gets into
office, okay, C-rats and their decendents, MRE's.
You be on some serious crack. Been distillin' rat adnoids again?

Master Sergeant, United States Air Force, Retired. I go on base and I'm
called Master Sergeant. It is an EARNED title, just as much as General or
Secretary. I suspect General Powel will retain the title of General over
Secretary.

I suspect that the use of either would not be limited to Air Force
bases.
