Didn't get skunked and didn't see any deformed fish (there). Maybe what we thought was the kiddie hole wasn't. -- Charlie... |

If you fished the Kiddie Hole and didn't see any deformed fish then you must have got skunked at the Kiddie Hole. Louie's right, Kiddie Hole fishing isn't even sportsmanlike. I hired a guide, the Camo Man, to teach me how to fish the San Juan on my first day there. He took me to the Kiddie Hole and taught me that if you go three drifts without a fish, you must have slime on your fly. That's how easy it is to catch fish there. It's a joke. I showed Dan'l, who at that time was a tyro, what the Camo Man showed me (right before I performed a spectacular 5 star full Reid in the December chill) and he was able to slay them too. That ain't fly fishing (no offense to Dan'l). I'm guessing that's your opinion of the fishing on the San Juan as a whole. The "Kiddy Hole" is just an exclamation point for the whole river. I think it's a fun to place to hook some big fish on small flies and light tackle. I've been to a number of San Juan Claves and I can't recall anyone from our group spending any extended periods of time in the Kiddy Hole and I've NEVER seen anyone from our group "shuffling". People would hit it on their way out and in (it's the first place next to the parking lot). I've fished it for rising fish, there have been times when that's the only rising fish I could find. It's a stupid argument anyway. Who gives a **** if someone wants to fish the "Kiddy Hole?" or the "Cable Hole" or any other "Hole." Virtually all the fish on the San Juan have been caught several times each season (some of the big ones maybe only hooked). There may be more scarred up fish in the Kiddy Hole because it get fished so heavily, but no matter where you fish the Quality Waters on the San Juan some of the fish you catch are going to be scarred up. That's a fact when fishing any heavily fished C&R areas. I caught a couple scarred up fish on the Madison this year, but maybe I was fishing the "Kiddy Hole" without knowing it. Willi |

It's true that I'm not much fond of tailwater fishing. It's phoney baloney on so many levels. But I did enjoy some decent enough dry fly fishing on the San Juan, some of it standing right next to you. -- Ken Fortenberry |

But the place where you showed me how to catch those fish (and thanks again BTW) was actually one run further across the river from the KH. Not that it makes a hill of beans one way or the other. I do remember your spectacular Reid, but I've never mentioned it, I don't think. As I remember you slipped whilst slogging your way towards me to take a picture of a fish I had on. Thanks for the try. No offense, but your definition of fly fishing ain't worth a hill of beans either. Danl |
