And why isn't chucking nightcrawlers a hobby to some? Chuck, you're sounding a tad elitist. You make it sound like only people with discretionary cash are entitled to pursue a hobby. Sorry if it came out that way, but what I'm actually saying is it's ironic for people who have enough time and money on their hands to engage in flyfishing and posting about it on a Usenet newsgroup to be talking as if their choice of hobby is a frugal, cost-effective one. Especially when most of said people are fishing with gear valued in the hundreds, if not thousands of dollars. I have thousands of dollars invested in my woodworking hobby. I admit it. I buy tools for very specific uses, partially because I like the tools and partially because I like what they do. But I'm not kidding myself by thinking I'm saving money making furniture at the same time. Chuck Vance (really, it's OK to admit it) |

Chuck Vance (really, it's OK to admit it) I don't think that anyone said that the hobby of fly fishing for them is a "frugal, cost-effective" one but there are ways to save some money and IMO, making your own rod is one of them. Although I agree that most people posting to ROFF are relatively well off, none of us have an unlimited amount of money available to us for our hobbies (at least I don't think anyone here is that rich!)and some people have more money than others. Different people are going to use the money they have "allotted" to their hobbies in different ways. Personally, I'd rather spend the money I have available to me on fishing trips rather than gear. I'd rather have a trip to Alaska than a fine bamboo rod with a fancy reel or a trip to the San Juan Clave rather than a new pair of waders or....... Other people enjoy owning gear for the sake of owning it and may seldom, if ever use it, but most, I would guess, like their gear "partially because I like the tools and partially because I like what they do". I expect we're going to have to agree to disagree. But, before I go, a couple of questions for you: 1. How much money would you estimate you spend per year on flyfishing trips, gear, etc.? 2. How much do you estimate you "saved" by assembling your own rod? Chuck Vance |
