There are a couple of people I "know" to some extent, as a result of
my having subscribed to ROFF for a long time, but I don´t know this
guy from Adam, just another nasty **** stirrer.

I met a few people from ROFF, quite a long time ago now, and they were
nice people, but none of them posts here any more, along with a whole
slew of others who presumably just got sick of the nastiness and off
topic rubbish, and simply ceased to subscribe.

Unless a large influx of people who actually are interested in
discussing fly-fishing and related matters occurs, and the "core" of
nasties are simply ignored, then there will be no change for the
better. Some of the people here apparently imagine that their "tenure"
gives them the right to be nasty to others, others are just assholes
per se. As there is no way to do anything about that, or to stop them
posting such crap, things will likely stay as they are.

Also, as the massive increase in websites, forums, etc, many with full
graphics and other capabilities has increased, where one may obtain
lots of info and pleasant angling related discussion and
entertainment, these usenet text based forums have become more or less
obsolete. When the present "core" of many, especially the angling
realted forums, dies off or leaves, it is likely that they will simply
cease to exist.

Most unlikely that anybody will even miss them much.

Really, I simply don´t know. I don´t know these people, or have any
idea of their reasoning or motivation. Some did not like my attitude
when a guy called George Gehrke died, and although it was years ago,
they still go on about it( As this particular poster "JR" also pointed
out). Some did not like my stating that I don´t like queers, and have
taken it out of context and exagerrated it constantly ever since.

Most of it is probably down to Fortenberry´s sustained propaganda amd
bull**** over a long period of time. Various other people now also
regularly make references to my being queer, or other similar rubbish.
This is pure invention, and more than a bit stupid, as even if I were
queer it would have no effect at all on my fly-fishing. I don´t really
consider it an insult as such, it´s just stupid. It annoys me to the
extent that these people can get away with propagating lies, but I don
´t care whether anybody actually thinks I am queer or not. I don´t
have anything against queers per se, I just don´t like them.

It seems that this sort of thing is quite widespread actually. There
are many people who use the internet to stir up trouble for complete
strangers, damage others in some way, and generally misbehave. I
really have no idea what motivates them. The fact that they often
state various things, ( like this guy calling me a "bitter old man",
inventing lies about my being kicked off forums, etc.etc. although he
does not know me or indeed anything about me), would indicate that
their own existences are miserable, and attackling others makes them
feel better about their own problems. However, I am not a
psychologist, or a psychiatrist, and I am only guessing.

Quite a few people on ROFF have very strong opinions on various
things, politics and some other stuff are cases in point, but
Fortenberry is a special case, as he apparently actually believes he
should be the final arbiter on what people say or think. This is quite
irrational. He does it on ROFF because he simply would not be
tolerated anywhere else.

Also, he very rarely posts anything at all on fly-fishing, ( except
when prodded, and then it´s often rubbish anyway), but is invariably
the first to attack old and new posters for various inconsequential
reasons. In the present case because somebody used a "slogan" he didn
´t like. This "slogan" was probably more a lame attempt at humour than
anything else, and any sensible person would simply ignore it, not
make a massively exaggerated song and dance about it. Fortunately, the
person concerned here is anonymous, so it won´t result in any personal
damage to him, and he can just laugh at Fortenberry´s silly antics.

I imagine most people who visit ROFF now, read a few posts, and then
simply move on. On occasion, ( as in this case), somebody might try to
argue, or state their case, but it is actually quite pointless, as
there is no way to make Fortenberry stop his nonsense, and it does him
no personal harm, as he does not subscribe to anything else, and is
unknown outside ROFF. People who do know him probably simply write him
off as just another internet nutcase.

Fortenberry also constantly calls other people´s motives, antecedents,
and beliefs on all sorts of things, into question, in a most nasty and
upsetting fashion. In any normal "real life" group, he would long
since have received a good thrashing, and been ostracised, but this
group is rather peculiar in that respect. I don´t really know why. I
can´t even think of a rational reason for anybody to actually support
or even tolerate such an asshole. Presumably people do have their
reasons for doing so, but I don´t know what they are, you will have to
ask them.

Once one has a "history" on this group, there is no escaping it, or
the fact that there are some here who will twist and pervert any and
all information, and even embellish it considerably, or simply lie, in
order to attack or wound their targets. This makes it more difficult
to attack new posters, and especially anonymous ones, but it doesn´t
stop Fortenberry, or some others either. They manage to construct
whole scenarios from nonsense, largely imagined or invented.

There are some things one can do about it, but they are difficult and
involved, and basically not really worth the trouble. Although many
people think they can get away with saying anything they like on the
net, this is not the case, and there are a couple of agencies who will
take such cases and do something about them. Look up "Cyber
harassment" or similar. You will have to file a complaint, and it may
take a long time before you hear anything about it, but if somebody
has seriously tried to damage you, tehy will do something about it.
You also have to ask yourself if it is worth going to that amount of
trouble to somehow punish an obvious loony? No sensible person would
do these things. Also, itn takes two to tango. If these people attack
and insult you, then the easiest and most sensible course of action is
to simply ignore it, or cease subscribing altogether. Indeed, I would
long since have done exactly that if the **** some of these idiots
write did not spill over into other places where I am well known and
liked. This NG itself is largely a matter of indifference to me,
although I still look in quite regularly. Not least to remind the
assholes that they are assholes, and to warn others. It is probably
largely a waste of time, but it costs nothing, and does at least give
me the satisfaction of speaking my mind to the ****bags, which I could
not and would not do elsewhere.

Lastly, I don´t know who originally said it, but it makes sense; "It
is pointless attributing something to evil, which can easily be
explained by stupidity". I think this largely applies here.

Anyway, my opinions on all this stuff are no more useful than anybody
else´s, and I am also rather tired of people asking me about it. The
main point is, that ROFF doesn´t really have much to do with fly-
fishing any more, and if that is what you are looking for then you
would be better advised to look elsewhere.

One is bound to assume that you have some reason or other for pursuing
the course of action you are presently engaged in, but one can hardly

Although you really can't damage your character any further, you should just

No, that is not the reason. This guy is simply lying. I don´t know

invent all sorts of things.

Whatever, it´s a lie, I have not been kicked off any forums, I merely
ceased to post to one, and I post less regularly to some others. One
or two people, presumably users of this group, have also tried to stir
up trouble on various forums. Invariably their posts are deleted, and
a couple have been banned. However, despite exhortations form other
posters on various forums, and indeed owners and moderators, to
continue posting, I don´t see much point in such nonsense, so I simply
don´t post any more.

My website is currently off line for other reasons.

I will post a copy of this to ROFF as well. It wont do any good of
course, but it keeps the record straight.
