"Mark Tinsky" wrote Wolfe Creek/ Craig where the fishing would be is aabout 3 hours from where we stayed at the Madison. Warning: that is a Montana resident driving velocity guesstimation .... if you drive halfway sane, plan on 4 hours G Tho chances are you wouldnt want to go home.... :) or ever back to the Madison ! The Missouri is most certainly a "must do" fishing destination .... I've only been there one trip, but plan to go back again this summer for a couple, three, weeks LOTS of rising fish, biggest pods anywhere I've ever been, LOTS of big fish if you learn how and where to look, but, LOTS of people at peak times, LOTS of drift boats, and it ain't exactly pristine wilderness ... the freeway is the view. Also, I was interested in Mark's mentioning "lighting" in his TR ... my strongest memory of fishing there is eyestrain ... there is something about the Prairie lighting that makes even smooth water look choppy, and those little Tricos impossible to see ... MY rating of the Mighty Mo as a fishing destination? ( not that anyone gives a ****?) ... Well, I can easily live the rest of my life and never fish the Madison below Quake again ... but, I'd feel deprived if I felt I'd never make it back to the Missouri. near Craig |

I think he left out the part about the wind too. Some of my most vivid memories of the mighty Mo have to do with **&!1$%%# wind. jh |

Your assesment is quite accurate. It takes some time to learn the river, as the trout area is almost 30 miles long Fish are stronger in different parts of the river at different times, same with the hatch and of course it varies year to year. A good knowledge of access ( which there is a lot of) and trails is extremely helpful! A lot of people hearing stories expect to catch lots of big fish quickly, but that isn t so. Wind plays a very big factor as do the flows. The present drought and over abundant pelicans, whirling disease, have certainly hurt the fishery. The light is also very tough for some reason, worse than on many other rivers I ve fished, especially wading. Late June is a good time to be there. Caddis are out and if it s been warm and low PMDs also.ANyone who want s to come out give me a holler, I ll show you some spots MT |

Sorry Warren couldn t resist MT I'd be interested in a two day trip up there during the Clave. Is there camping in the area? Willi Yes plenty tho hardly as nice as the spots on t he madison. They re all near the frontage road which has some traffic and road noise. But they are all right on the river which is nice MT |
