I always thought the lightspeed was a good looking and smooth reel but
always thought it was too thin and did not think the reels could
holdup to prolonged dropping and banging without causing a slight bend
in the frame or the reel spool.

That is exactly what happened to my LS2. Dropped it on a rock and the
spool bent and jammed. I was able to roughly straighten it with my
fingers and it now rotates fine, with a just a little wobble. The main
problem is the cone in the "sealed" drag system corroded badly after 2
years use in fresh water. It is now back for repair. I wont buy another
one.

A few weeks ago I fell, and slammed my LS2 into a rock. I was sure it
was going to have a big dent in the spool or frame. The only damage I
can see, is a few tiny burrs on the rim of the spool. That incident was
probably the 3rd time this reel has met a rock, up close and personal.
The only damage has been the marks from the last fall. I did have a
problem with a sticky spool. A dab of lubricant(silicone floatant)on the
shaft fixed it. I like my Lightspeed, but think they're ugly. ;-)

Yeah, the spool is stuck. The drag works fine.

I agree. It's very unusual. I have a Force 2 w xtra spool Force 3 w

Ever. I also have a Sage 3200 - which Waterworks also made - and never

had
any problems with that reel either. I'll never buy anythign else than
Waterworks. Maybe you're just unlucky, and just got a "bad" reel? Wont

they
just replace the reel?

They didn't last time. I e-mail them and am hoping they do this time.

The
$40 plus shipping fee to have it fixed is getting expensive...

Been very happy with my 1.5. I've had it about two years and fished
with a quite a bit.

Was that "sticky spool" not releasing? The drag works fine I just can't
change spools.

They are pretty tough. I am far from gentle with my gear and let clients
use it. I wish they still made the LP. I tried to get them to "find" a
left over. I have the LP 1 and 2 and it has been awesome. They said that
it had mechanical problems and as a result they discontinued it...

The spool was not spinning freely, because the shaft was dry, or had
some gunk on it. I just put a small dab of silicone on it, and it's been
fine since.

If I have one gripe about the LS....besides it's looks, it's the way the
spool is held on to the reel. AFAICT, it's an interference fit of a
o-ring that keeps the spool on. To get it off, you have to give it a
pretty good yank. My guess is, the o-ring on your reel is dry, or
squared off. Then again, I could be completely wrong....wouldn't be the
first time.

Just got off the phone with a service rep. She said that the drag is sealed
ONLY when the spool is on. Because I change spools and allow moisture to
penetrate the seal before it is created, corrosion takes place and causes it
to seize. She said that I need to dry the spindle in the field to prevent
such a problem. As a guide, I find that difficult to do when the client's
service is at stake...

I think my next reel will be a Galvin...unless someone here has opinions on
those...

I have a bunch of Litespeeds and haven't had that problem
with any of them.

I've been told that I shouldn't do this, but I pack the
brake well with grease. That makes the spool come
off easily and it's kept me from rust problems even
though I'll change spools wet with sal****er.

One problem that I've encountered with Litespeeds
is that each reel seems to have its own "character"
w/respect to setting the drag in terms of the number
of revolutions it takes to advance from lightest to
heaviest frag.
