Valid point, though only half-presented. Yes, generic knock-off store brand
stuff can be inferior, but you need to research the "store" brand before
writing it off completely. Sometimes, these reels are rebadged "brand" name
reels in actuality. Look for the fine print, like Brand X Spray Paint at
Wal-Mart, fine print reads "PProduced and Packaged by Krylon specifically
for Wal-Mart Stores". Brand X tissue paper at Walgreens, fine print reads
"Produced and Packaged by Kleenex for Walgreens" and so on...my favorite is
the 3/$1.00 generic Mac&Cheese at Food Lion, "Packaged for individual sale
by Kraft Foods". So check out some of the house brand reels around, I know
that Daiwa makes some for use as either private labeled BPS or Cabelas
reels.

Otherwise, if you can't find a "brand name" pedigree for house brands, then
I agree. It is best to steer clear if you want something that will last a
reasonable amount of time.

I suggest roaming the sporting goods section of your local Wal Mart for
"steals" on Daiwa Baitcasters, or occasionally Dick's Sporting Goods will
blow out higher end reels when new models are on the horizon. I have a
handful of Daiwa Procasters that I got this way, never paid over $69.95 for
a single one of them. I've never been as lucky with Shimano equipment
though, it always seems to bring top dollar, even on clearance.

The original poster may want to check out the "Clearance Cave" at
www.cabelas.com, I scored a nice 4000 series Daiwa spinning reel this past
fall there, for $39.95. Also look for similar clearances at BPS if they have
a clearance section. If the only thing wrong with a reel is it is last
year's model, then IMHO, there is nothing wrong with it at all, and one
should take advantage of these model close-outs.

I do not believe you get what you
pay for with Store name brands". If there reel is on sale for half price
they still are making profit. Get your self a decent Abu Garcia, Shimano
or
Daiwa reel. I have had a few - 6 to be exact of the Bass Pro named
products - cheap construction on the inside where it counts. Gears, and
drags seem to wear out within two years and have to be sent back for
repair
and parts charges which are almost enough to buy a new reel.

This is just my personal experience with one retailers brand.

The best advice I could give you is to buy what feels right for you and
your
style of fishing at a price you can afford. If all you can afford is the
Store name brand just remember you may have to replace it or fix it long
before a real name brand reel is just getting broke in.

I would generally agree with Illinois Fisherman, but I stick by my
recommendation of the BPS extreme reel. I have a single copy of their Pro
Qualifiers with 8 bearings, and I don't like it as much, although it's a
fairly decent reel.

Which particular reels did you have from BPS that were dogs? Inquiring
minds and all that...

Limited budget? Curado? The questioner is either a newby or has a limited
budget. For about $40 on sale, they can get a Abu 4600 / 4601 reel and this
is a decent reel. It may not last like a curado, but for a couple of years
it will be a good reel.
