Who still didn't find anything about the DCAs, like what kind of drag they have, quality, etc. George, Some years ago, when the DCA's were first discontinued, a friend of mine told me about this fantastic deal on Lamson reels at his local fly shop. Thinking that they were the LP model that I was very familiar with (love my LP3), I told him to pick one up for me, and I would get it from him the following week when we met on Kodiak for our annual Coho fishing trip. Another mutual friend did likewise. Neither of us are at all happy with the reels, which are the DCA 4 size. Its not by accident that they were in production for such a short time before they were discontinued. 1. Even at its tightest setting the drag doesn't have adequate resistance for large fish.. ( the drag is a drum & brakeshoe design rather than disc). 2. With no heavier use than I give my LP, the DCA looked more dinged up in one trip than the LP does after 10+ years. 3. The drag on mine blew out completely on about the 3rd large Coho that made a strong run. 4. Both of us sent our reels back to Lamson (he to just get a more satisfactory heavy drag setting, me to get the entire drag assembly replaced) and, upon return, there was only slight improvement in maximum drag resistance. -- Bob Weinberger La, Grande, OR place a dot between bobs and stuff and remove invalid to send email |

I have one of those, and it's a total POS. The drag is pathetic. I dropped it on the rocks -- just a simple no-big-deal drop -- and it bent and has never worked properly since. -- Cut "to the chase" for my email address. |

The only two things that I can think of that are somewhat innovative (i.e. not in the pages of those old mags) are CDC flies and Large Arbor reels. If you get a chance to look at Leon Link's book on CDC you'll find that the Europeans have been CDC fans for much longer than here in CONUS. Mu |

They've certainly been using them in the Jura mountains in France/Switzerland since I first went there forty years ago. Lazarus -- Remover the rock from the email address |
wading boots are less like bricks and tippet material is much better.
Hackle is outstanding. Fly boxes have improved as has the selection of flies, I mean, one can choose, online no less, from of over 185 flies, just for the Madison... the mind boggles :-) Harry Mason www.Troutflies.com Yes, but has no one miniturized the fly boxes so I can carry 185 differing types of flies (okay, I need six of each size in 3 different sizes, that comes out to 3330 flies)? "George Cleveland" wrote in message ... Can anyone think of anything else? g.c. Well, not being old enough to have been there 20 years ago, I can only guess at what must have been available tackle-wise. I would propose that the internet is one of the largest innovations in our sport. It is the way I met all of the folks here and through you folks, I restarted down the only true and righteous path of fly fishing enlightenment. Danl |
