This hunting incident may not damage Cheney himself, he was headed for retirement in 2009 in any case, but it will hurt the Republican party. Joe Sixpack will tolerate a lot, **** on the Constitution, lie to Congress, torture and kill a few towel heads, who cares. But Joe Sixpack knows that shooting your hunting companion in the face is, at best, careless stupidity and if he himself had done it he'd be talkin' to the sheriff forthwith and not the next day. Joe Sixpack *hates* rich *******s who think they're above the law. This will resonate in a negative way at least through the 2006 elections even if Cheney does manage to remain in office. Um, Whittington is a lawyer..."Joe Sixpack" would probably lend Cheney a box of shells...and a gun...and GASP! a good dog...well, OK, so maybe not the dog, but his wife or truck or something... Seriously, based on the circumstances and evidence at hand, nobody would be talking to the sheriff, forthwith or otherwise - it would have _generally_ been handled the same way. Actually, it probably got more attention from the local LEOs and TPWD because it was Cheney, et al And kinda-seriously, "Joe Sixpack" probably doesn't care about what guys like Cheney and Whittington (or Kerry and Edwards, or Clinton and Gore, or Aristotle and Plato, or Abbie and Jerry, or Malcolm and Medgar, or Rush and Al, or...) do, be they shooting at each other or otherwise, as long as it doesn't affect him in any way he can readily see, taste, and/or feel. Now, if Jeff had taken a shot at Larry or Rusty at Dale, it might be a little different... HTH, R |

Meanwhile you will continue your pittiful life as a ersatz cowboy on Brokeback Mountain. You're already finished. d;o) |

He likes guns and hunting. Most Joe Sixpacks that have guns and hunt, have seen someone or felt the sting of shot from a wayward shot. |

I don't think he ever had a clear shot at it. You guys are pretty naive about what "politics" means. It's not just about running for office. Cheney has another 2 1/2 years as VP, and since he's the one who really runs things in the "Bush" administration that's a big deal. When these guys came to power the story they tied to spin (successfully) was that they were more competent than the previous administration. Even though we've seen time and again that they're actually appallingly incompetent (the Iraq debacle, the Katrina ****up, the Social Security and Medicare messes, etc., etc.), this hunting accident highlights Cheney's incompetence in a particularly stark way. -- Cut "to the chase" for my email address. |

I'd use many words to describe Cheney, but incompetent really isn't one of them. Aside from this latest incident, I believe events are unfolding largely as he planned them. -- Scott Reverse name to reply |

And what leads you to believe that this is going to change anything? You pointed out the salient fact yourself......Cheney runs things.....but you seem to have missed the primary implication. True.....but it doesn't matter. Wolfgang who knows that lord acton was right too......and also missed the point. |
