Took my kids skiing (finally!) last weekend, along with a good family friend
who hadn't seen my kids on the skinny skis for quite some time. He was very
impressed with how well they did. I replied that considering I had them in
skis shortly after they learned to walk, and skied with them on my back
until they got too big, he shouldn't be surprised at all!

Skål!

Where else ya gonna find an event that periodically brings together
representatives of most of the nations on the planet.....and doesn't involve
bloodshed?

Um......well.....not much, anyway. :)

No it's called an opinion. Just because it disagrees with yours does not
make it any less enlighting nor ignorant.

Speedskating is an individual sport
and Shani Davis was right to blow off some made up "team" ****.
This is the first time in the history of Olympic speedskating
that a "team" event was on the venue and the American Federation
(which has screwed Davis so bad over the years he trains in
Canada and doesn't take their money) recruited him at the last
second.

So maybe he can race in the, ahem Olympics, as his own country? I heard or
read, i forget which, his interview where he called the sponsoring body "his
enemy" so wtf is he doing on the "team"? Because that "team" is his meal
ticket.

He's probably not the first to view the guy who signs the paycheck as the
enemy.

Wolfgang
or maybe i'm not understanding something about labor relations. :)

The feeling is mutual. The Olympics has an extreme distaste for
all things "Atlanta." Somewhere in Atlanta a bus full of German
journalists driven by a totally lost two-toothed redneck is
still circling the interstate.

IIRC, most of the bus drivers during the '96 Olympics were from out of town.
We'll send your guy back to Churbana as soon as he runs out of gas.

There is no "team". He earned the right to skate in the Olympics
on his own, by himself, from a training site in Calgary. He is
from Chicago, a citizen of the US, so he skates as an American
but he isn't on the American "team" because in his sport there
is no "team".

I say he had a duty to, you say he didn't. I'd have thought you to be a
little better on the adjective choice than that.

Everyone at the so called Olympics are on the *Team* of one country or
another. How he trained is of no matter to the issue at hand. Regardless of
how he trained, once he qualified, he was part of the *Team*. If he had
beaten everyone in whatever passes for the speed skating qualifiing event
and was left off the *team* on the basis of whatever their disagreemnet is,
then it would be a different story. And it would be a greater wrong than
what I consider a selfish action on his part. At least I assumed he
qualified somehow vis a vis that lady figure skater who ended up physically
unable to compete anyway.

Regardless he earned his medal. He's got his 15 minutes of fame. And if it
had not been for the *Olympics* people like me would never have heard of
him.

You said: "His ass should have been given a one way coach ticket
back to the states."

I'll stick with my adjective choice.

Shani Davis earned the right to skate the 1K and neither he
nor his donkey should have had that taken away from them no
matter what misguided, ignorant opinions others have about
individual "team come lately" sports.
