Help with Smallies

I just got done on the Penobscot river in Main. They were a piece of cake to
catch.in the river riffles we caught them on black jigheads with a crawfish
colored grub, in the slackwater areas they were suckers for a small white
spinnerbait with a colorado blade. we also nailed some with a crawfish
imitation on a football jig. Good luck

I am going smallmouth fishing for the first time in Maine what type of

lures
should I use? Do you fish for them in the same spots where I would think
largemouths would be? Any help would be appreciated.

I love that piece of water. Rarely fish anything there but a 4" Fin-S,
unweighted.

I would add that the breaks between rock and sand/mud
are great for Maine river smallies. Anywhere there is a change
in near shore bottom structure is promising. Deeps cuts along ledge
in the Kennebec and up along cut out banks are also good right now.
I haven't seen any fish in the spawn area's.

Firetiger or blue silver Rapala suspenders in the smaller sizes have been
working well (alewives and blueback herring are in the rivers as well
as elvers) . Deep Diving Rebel Craws cast upstream and dove down then
drifted along the ledges have been good to me the last week or so.

Didn't mean to ignore your message. I saw it when I DL'd that night, went
away for a few days and couldn't find it when I came back.

Truthfully, if the nut bed in the back end of Rondout is developed, I'd
start there, fishing for LM. I often topwater some smallies back in there
too, off the channel edge on the outside of the weedbed just outside the
nut almost across from Lou's Boat Basin).

Other than that, I'd crank a shad or parrot colored crankbait -- something
tha dives to maybe 7 or 8 feet -- on every piece of rock that extends out
from the bank between Port Ewen and Catskill. Alternate that with a
jerkbait or topwater.
