Does anyone use Berkley Vanish flouro?
Just posting what I have experienced. The stuff works for me. Just for
kicks, do any of you store your rods and reels anywhere near a window in the house or garage? From my experience, sunlight is the most detrimental to mono or flouro. Used to store my rods in a rack I made in my bedroom. Morning sunlight would come thru that window for about 2 hours everyday. If I used any of those rods without stripping off 20-25' of line, I could guaratee I would lose a lure within the first few casts. Sometimes the rods would be exposed like that for only 3-4 days, sometimes 2 weeks. Didn't matter. Sunlight will make it week/brittle or whatever ya want to call it. All my soft plastics reels have Vanish Transition, all others have either Trilene or Stren 14-20#. I use 14# Vanish on my small plastics and 17 on all others. I have absolutely NO experience with pound tests less than these. Maybe that is where you northern boys have bad experiences with the stuff. I only get to watch shows of y'alls waters and I know a lot of em use 10# or less. Sure would like to fish some of y'alls smallie waters. Maybe someday. "Chris Rennert" wrote in message ... Well, I cannot say I have ever done any control tests, but I have been using Fluoro's for a long time now, and I went from one Fluoro to Vanish to save some $$, and I have to say it is absolute garbage. I contacted Berkley, and even they admitted that they had to improve the strength. I know what you are saying about breaking at the knot, that does happen if it is not cinched down correctly, but most of my Vanish breaks were in the middle of the line. I cannot say I have reproduced the results with the brands I mentioned earlier. Steve Erwin wrote: Seems others hate it but I have been using it since it came out and think it is a very good line. I worm fish with it and like the way I can feel the bottom much better than mono. My eyesight is not what it used to be and got to where I could not see where the line met the water. Went back to clear/blue Stren and never had the feel and less hookups with that. When they came out with the Transition Vanish, I gave it a try and wont use anything else. Most here sing the praises of braid, but I for one think it is crap. If I were fishing waters where the grasss was heavy as some here from the north do, then maybe I would use braid. Don't know. As far as complaints about knot breakage on the Vanish, I have never had a knot to fail. I always use a palomar, but I am very careful when I cinch it down. People I know that do have knot problems have problems with all line(mono and flouro) because they don't cinch it down right. At least that is what the problem was when they fished with me. Different strokes for different folks is what it boils down to. "Brendan" wrote in message ... I've started using it recently and find it quite useful. |

Maybe it IS the case here Bob. All the dissing the Vanish line and all. I
have no stock in Berkley and receive exactly nada from them. What's with the freakin attitude????? Do you not think that sunlight is harmful to it? It's no secret. All the line companies warn about it. I always ignored it too until it started happenin to me and found out what was causing it. I figured it wasn't rocket science. I left this newsgroup once because it seemed if you weren't in the "click" everything one would say is assaulted. Damn I guess things aint changed around here! "Bob La Londe" wrote in message .. . Steve,
I am sure none of us thought you would take any of this so personally. I went through spool after spool of using Vanish as leader material, and I broke it more than enough times to move on to something else. The question was asked about anyone using Vanish, and everyone answered with their opinions and experiences. You haven't had any issues, in my opinion you are just lucky, or using very heavy leaders. I guess I look at it this way, I am only able to fish so much (which I guess is relatively a lot) and the last thing I want to do is talk about the one that got away when it was something I could have prevented by using better equipment. I think you read that the worng way. If I left my rods out in the sun wouldn't I have the same problem with all my line? You had good luck with whatever size of Vanish you use. That's fine, but lots of folks here including me have had crap luck with Vanish. We said so. Do we not have the right to state our opinion if it contradicts yours? Perhaps if you answered all queries first we would be forwarned so as not to say anything that disagrees with your opinion or view point. In the click. That is just too funny. I am so far out of the click that I have to take a running start to catch up and try what they say about me. Nah Chris, I aint takin it personally from you. I do not use leaders, per
say 20# main and 10# leader. I guess that is what you are talking about. I use 14# all the way from the reel to the bait on small plastics. 17# on all others. Bob I remember from a good while back. Like I posted that I made the observation of what my problem was and know beyond a doubt what it was, I thought I would pass it along so that maybe some here may experiment. He answered like I was calling him out as being dumb. Not the case at all. I would never do that. Forums, newsgroups and such are tools one can use to learn. I used to post here, got tired of the clique crap that was going on and stopped posting. Stopped lurking altogether and unsubscribed. After a couple of years, I thought I'd check in. A lot of folks aint here no more and some left for the same reasons I did. I learned a lot from the people here and I thank y'all. At one time there was a line that came out (I think it was a Stren co-polymer) that was discussed here and a certain few liked it. Quite a bit more didn't and I was one of those that didn't. I told what was going on with it and I got slammed. Cannot for the life of me figure out how someone out in cyberspace can tell me what my line was doing to me when I was looking at it myself with a magnifying glass. What it was was when you cinched the knot down, well lubricated and pulled slowly, if just enough pressure was put on it the 2, as in co-polymer, would snap apart right at the knot, leaving only the inside core holding the bait on. With about 4-5# more pressure the core would snap. I lost 2- $15 baits one right after the other. Put that rod up for the day. When I got home I could duplicate what was happening time after time and with a glass I could see what was happening. Still got slammed on it. I may be from the south and dumb as a bag of rocks but I aint ignorant. If someone asks anyones opinion here I wont slam you or anyone else for it. If it happened to me and I figure out what maybe I was doing wrong then I figure it might help someone else. It surely couldn't hurt. I thought that is what a forum or newsgroup was for. If there are those that thinks this is their private country club and all here have to walk in step then there cannot be anything learned. I rekon I'll just lurk for a time. If something comes along that someone wants to know about, I will just try e-mailing them instead of posting here, at least till I see who and what is going on. Later. Did I say a freakin thing about your experience? Nope. I told mine and what
was the cause of some of my problems. Take it or leave it. quote: If that were the case don't you think we would have problems with all our line? I aint Al, so don't answer me like I was. Nope. Never had a problem when mine were left on the deck all day, but they were used and wet. Direct sun thru a window for days and sometimes a week did though. That is what I said. Did it do it to just the Vanish line? Nope. Did it to the Stren and Berkley Trilene too. I can duplicate that as many times as you'd like. If they are kept out of sunlight when stored, I never have a problem. Never tried this, but some friends keep their rods in the trunks of their cars( yes in Texas we do drive cars also). In the summer time it gets mighty hot in there and seems that heat is detrimental to the line also. I know none of you have a hard time believing that. Ultra violet rays are bad for many things, plastic, PVC, momo, flouro, etc. Surely you don't have a problem with that. Sorry that y'all don't like Vanish. If I have a problem with lines I dump em too. Later. "Bob La Londe" wrote in message .. . "Steve Erwin" wrote in message ... Maybe it IS the case here Bob. All the dissing the Vanish line and all. Sure, and if that was the cause of all the rest of our problems with the Vanish don't you think we would have had problems with all the rest of out lines too? P.S. My rods get stored below deck or in the storage building where I keep my boat. The only time they see daylight is when I'm fishing. Seaguar doesn't have a problem for me. Suffix doesn't have a problem for me. P-Line Flouroclear will delaminate after a couple days of continuous fishing, but otherwise has no unexpected problems. P-Line pure flouro seems to work as expected. Berkley Big Game seems to work fine except its stiffer than Suffix. Maxima mono and flouro carbon seem to perform within spec for their line size. Most of the braids seem hold up ok. Just Vanish, Super Mono XX, and Iron Silk so far have gone on my not again list with Vanish being the worst. Heck, I had less random break offs with the cheap spools of mono I woud buy from K-Mart when I was a kid. Now those rods got left everywhere back then, and the line still worked ok. Sometimes without being changed except once a year. I really don't think UV or heat is the cause the bad experience I had with Vanish. -- Bob La Londe Fishing Arizona & The Colorado River Fishing Forums & Contests http://www.YumaBassMan.com -- Posted via a free Usenet account from http://www.teranews.com |

Did I say a freakin thing about your experience? Nope. I told mine and what was the cause of some of my problems. Take it or leave it. I love newsgroups with an attitude and the will to back it up. Haven't had this much fun since I suscribed to alt.food.wine. My experience with Vanish, as I said before, is not that great. I have lost more lures and fish on Vanish than any other line. I use braid quite a bit and love it. I use mono and like it. I also fly cast for bass, bluegills and crappie. I have never had a breakage on Orvis 3X tippet. Yet, my Vanish occasionally breaks. Go figure. I am careful to store my rods/reels out of the sun per manufacturers advice. I will take the advice of the group and try another fluoro next season because I do like the soft hookups it seems to give. |
