Agree on the boat ... it's a big place and sometimes it would be nice to get
to another part of it quickly ... the only Hebgen specialist guide I know
uses a Boston Whaler and about a 150hp motor. The fish tend to be pretty
damn noise/wave shy though and I've had better luck in a kickboat than in a
pram (my first all summer trip, five or six years back I took a 8 foot pram
AND two kickboats AND a float tube ... asadi's cowboy ain't got nothin on me
:-) mainly, I think, because of noise. Bob Lamm, a 'famous' guide I know
through the dog world, likes to take his clients out in a canoe ... he
paddles and positions, they fish, they catch fish ... looks like a good
system for the place, .... um, maybe a canoe on top wouldn't be a bad idea ?

The real, genuine, world famous Gulpers happen most reliably in mid-August
...... the lake fishes well all season, often to rising fish, but the real,
genuine, world famous Gulpers really are something very special, not to be
believed until experienced. Not sure if I'll be there this year or not,
yet.

This summer could be special, I'm prayin' for a cool wet one to compliment
the snow pack and making plans, if not commitments, to fish harder and
longer than in the hot and dry conditions we've suffered too often the last
few years. No place I've ever been has the same appeal as "Greater
Yellowstone" in a cool, wet, summer .. it's magical .... and, .. rare.

I offer that it's actually easier to make the choice when going on a
backpack than when towing the house behind you. Each year as I start to
gear up for the summer I go through the pile of stuff and find lots of " I
haven't used that once in the last couple years" junk .... clearly a
"leave behind" ... but it's oh so hard to leave behind when you can just
tuck it into a closet or someplace else out of the way "just in case."

I bought diesel today for $4.19.9/gal and even though a 10 pound item
tucked away won't affect mileage ... a bunch of them, together, might.
And, more important than ecomomy is the mental disclipline and clarity
that follows from 'sparseness.'

At this point I have a pretty damn big pile of quality fly fishing stuff
I'd give to the first person that saw it and said, " that's cool, I may
get one of those"

I was once given a Lab puppy, sired by FC, NAFC Winsom Cargo, by Cargo's
owner Cal C.

I named the pup "Diesel" and when Cal asked why I replied, "I want him to be
strong, tough, and built for the long haul." Turns out he only sorta
lived up to the name, however ...... he was just very noisy and smelled bad
:-)

I'd have my own kickboat. I've fished Hegben twice -- once in Gherke's old
Gink Keeps it Up drift boat of Warren's (with Willi), and once in a float
tube. The ideal boat for Hegben, IMO, would be a motorized runabout.

Joe the Elder offers--I stayed in cabin on shore of Hegben for two weeks on
my first trip to Yellowstone area many years ago. Being new to ff I took
advice from local who loaned me a canoe. --___Cast in front of gulper--damm
if they swim in a straight line.!Use these small flies--I had never seen a
size 32?
But I was young and casting arm did not get tired so I remember catching
a few 20 plus inch trout. !!! Not as big as browns in NZ but largest trout I
have ever seen in US!

was Quake Lake. I've never fished Hebgen.

Yeah, OK...I guess it's just that you do remind one of both, not to
mention Vivien Leigh...IAC, I still envision you running around the
mountain in green velvet curtains with a curtain rod for shoulder pads,
playin' grab-ass with Harvey Korman...although I guess you calling him
"Shep" isn't all that far-fetched...
