It has nothing to do with being for or against Obama, it was the speech
in context. There was enough stuff there to give Rove, Carville, et al,
plenty to work with to craft opposition. The length of Biden's
congressional career mirrors McCain's, and it seems kinda odd that a new
politics of the future guy would be just like Lincoln, Roosevelt, and
Kennedy. And how many working-class families have "rah-rah" videos from
supporters prominently featuring the supporter hisownself sailing on his
yacht around the family compound in Hyannisport? If McCain had shown
such a video featuring Bush I tooling around in his boat, golfing at the
R & A, etc., what would the reaction be? To tie yourself Roosevelt and
Kennedy to counter a charge of elitism? To hint that your Presidency
will be like that of Clinton's (but only in any, but non-specific, way
that anyone might think was good, but be nothing like it in any, but
non-specific way anyone might think bad)? No foreign oil in 10 years,
but he's gonna reward companies that create jobs right here "in America"
- is that South, Central, or North America? Seriously, though, the US
oil industry, the one that he wants to tax the bejeebers out of, creates
jobs and supports thousands and thousands of working-class families and
by definition, can only create (or maintain) jobs in the US.

Etc., etc., etc....

Even the closing song - if you don't know the lyrics, read them. Sure,
one of the kids could grow up to be President, but they could also be
the one going to prison - two choices, Prez or prison. And in the other
verse, the couple are riding in a limo wanting to be "stars" - not
helping, not changing, just wanting things for themselves. I'm
surprised they didn't play "Save A Horse..."...you know, to get the PETA
vote...here's a hint, Dems - don't use C & W songs at conventions.

I stand by what I said - this was not a good speech. You and Oprah's
mileage may vary...

You're wrong, plain and simple. I'd say that only a blind a rabid
partisan would wish to allow absolutely no criticism of not only the
speech, but the candidate in general. And that anyone who doesn't see
some pretty glaring weaknesses in Obama is not only blindly and rabidly

What makes you think I'm a Republican? IAC, as I've said, if it were
Bush's veep or _certain_ folks in his administration running, such a
charge could stick, but with McCain, it's not accurate and as such, it's
not a certain strategy. Plus, given the candidates' weaknesses and
strengths, it's too much of a "um, well, that's all we got..." strategy.

forgotten by the bulk of the population. I have no doubt that folks of
all races and colors can be another Chester A. Arthur...

An Obama-supporting friend made what I think is a particularly good,
"working-man" comment about it - "he sounded like a guy who just won a
train that he isn't sure how to drive..."

We have already had black presidents. 5 have been documented, here are
2.

Andrew Jackson was our 7th president from 1829 to 1837. The Virginia
Magazine of History Volume 29 says that Jackson was the son of a White
woman from Ireland who had intermarried with a Negro. The magazine also
said that his eldest brother had been sold as a slave in Carolina. Joel
Rogers says that Andrew Jackson Sr. died long before President Andrew
Jackson Jr. was born. He says the president's mother then went to live
on the Crawford farm where there were Negro slaves and that one of these
men was Andrew Jr's father. Another account of the "brother sold into
slavery² story can be found in David Coyle's book entitled "Ordeal of
the Presidency"

Abraham Lincoln was our 16th president from 1861 to 1865. J. A. Rogers
quotes Lincoln's mother, Nancy Hanks, as saying that Abraham Lincoln was
