Um, well, you've probably not ever had to outrun a bad storm on blue water,

I don't know anyone who has ever "outrun" a storm on blue water. *You
either avoid it or get ready to ride it out.

Then you don't know anyone who has radar and a radio...

Seriously, though, I'm not sure what you mean, but I've "outrun" (and been on
boats that have "outrun") any number of storms.

What I meant was that, under sail, the speed of any storm I have seen
is such that, if it is chasing you, you ain't got a prayer.
Sometimes, you can cut vertical to an approaching squall and let it go
around. But a "real" storm -- uh, uh.

Sometimes (not often) a power boat may outrun a storm.

And, yes, many is the time I have had to use sails to catch fresh
water. Of course, where I lived in the islands, our only source of
fresh was runoff from the tin roof on the hooch. Mostly we drank
froot jooch -- mixed rather well.

Only used radar once -- on a delivery to Palau. Calendar weather all
the way.

cheers

oz, who misses the beach
