Seriously, though, I'm not sure what you mean, but I've "outrun" (and been on boats that have "outrun") any number of storms. What I meant was that, under sail, the speed of any storm I have seen is such that, if it is chasing you, you ain't got a prayer. Sometimes, you can cut vertical to an approaching squall and let it go around. But a "real" storm -- uh, uh. Sometimes (not often) a power boat may outrun a storm. And, yes, many is the time I have had to use sails to catch fresh water. Of course, where I lived in the islands, our only source of fresh was runoff from the tin roof on the hooch. Mostly we drank froot jooch -- mixed rather well. Only used radar once -- on a delivery to Palau. Calendar weather all the way. cheers oz, who misses the beach |
