I agree. I haven't been there in a while, but I'm seriously
considering going through the area either on the way to or from the
western clave this year.

Either way you better look me up. We'll hit the Animas and the San Juan at
the minimum.

Will do. You'll be at the western clave too, right?

Keep me in the loop if this happens, and I'll try to keep the dates open.

BTW, bruiser, we need to think about the penasco this spring...

Once when I must have been about 8 years old my parents took us on the narrow
gage railroad trip from Durango to silverton and about half way thru the trip
the train stopped to let a fisherman off. They said they would pick him up on
the way back to Durango on the next day's trip. I thought HOW COOL and have
always wordered about doing a trip like that. does anyone know someone who has
done that, I still think about that once in a while.

Here's what it says in "Fly Fishing Southern Colorado" by Craig Martin, Tom
Knopick, and John Flick:

"For a special adventure, consider taking the steam train of the Durango and
Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad from Durango to Needleton. After a two hour
ride, hop off and fish for a couple of hours, then catch the train on the
way back from Silverton. Such an excursion requires advance planning and
reservations" (p. 128)

I've always thought it sounded really fun also. The authors of the book do
say that the fishing isn't really all that good that far upstream on the
Animas. At some point I should at least ride the train, but doubt if I ever
will because it's so close to the San Juan and the great parts of the
Animas.

I did that once, back in '88 or so. It was pretty cool.
The river in the canyon is fast, deep whitewater. I
caught about a dozen rainbows, about 8-12 inches or so,
by fishing the pocket water around the edges of the
main current.

The hot fly was an elk hair caddis, and the fish would
nail it just as the current started to drag it under.
Bright boy that I am, that only happened four or five
times before I noticed what was happening, and started
dragging the fly under on purpose.

Me too Dale. I've never talked to anyone who's done it. I'd like to try
take that trip.
