Fished the Clearwater near Orofino last Fri, Sat and Sun. Zeroed the
first
day, 9 lber the second and a 12 lber the third. Pretty slow fishing and
the
weather was pretty crummy, cold, rainy and windy (fairly normal for this
time of year) for the most part. Most everyone I spoke with was having
the
same success, saying the fishing was slow. Saturday was the last day of
the
derby, you could walk between boats. 19.1 lbs. was the big fish of the
derby.

Woke to about an inch of snow this morning and snowing hard. It's suppose
to
be single digit temps by the first of the week. Oh boy, I can hardly
wait.

Next trip won't be till mid January on the Green River to fight off cabin
fever.

JT

From my perspective 2 steelhead in 3 days is pretty successful
congratulations. That 12 pounder had to be fun. What did you catch
them on? I am sorely tempted to have a go at a gear set up if for no
other reason than the cold. What is the mix of fly/gear on the
Clearwater?

The Green? In Winter? Do you mean the Green out of Wyoming down into
Utah, Dutch John, Deer Park etc.etc? Keep going on that run and you
run into Desplation Canyon, area 51 or some such. ;+)) Its been 45
years or so since we went down from the Flaming Gorge dam in a 2 man,
to Deer Park. Young, preg and crazy.

"Toto, we are not in New Jersey any more."

Most everyone uses a speyrod of some variation in the 10 to 12 wt. range.
Flies are whatever you feel confident in. I tend toward the skunks, coal car
and copper train variations. I really don't think it matters what you tie on
your leader, if you put it in front of their face, they will take it.

Yes, the Green River out of Dutch John. My cousin lives in South Jordan, so
I fly into Salt Lake. It can be some pretty cold fishing however very
productive using small stuff in the 18 - 22 range. Most times there are so
many fish taking naturals, we will team up having a guy above watching the
fish telling the rod holder when to set. Honestly the place is like an
aquarium with so many fish hanging/feeding in the shallows. This trip is
more of an excuse to get out of the house and escape cabin fever midway
through winter. It's about the only time I would consider the Green. I
fished it once during the summer months, by far the busiest place I have
every been that time of year.

BTW, I should have said my buddy caught the 9 lber the second day and I
caught the 12 lber the third. Steelhead can be far and few between and
generally end up being a team effort with landing/netting, etc...

Thanks for starting this thread, it's been a nice break from all the other
BS.

Damn, your comments per Utah and the Green, bring back some good
memories and if i drift, the smell of a sagebrush fire. The Green in
Winter has got to be a younger man's thing. Be sure to share a TR
please. The Uintah's are such a unique mountain range. This Jersey boy
ran into his first moose while fighting my way through a willow
thicket. Ill never forget it.

The Black Rock desert in spring, the Jericho sand dunes, Mt Timpanogos
from my dorm room window, Star Valley swisscheese. Well that was then
and this is now, but maybe the turkey will come from Manti. ;*)) Yum

I wanna go flyfishing in Copenhagen, but I don't know *where* - east,
west (no, not west), north, south? *Where?

Haven't read ALL the 'Where can I fish in Copenhagen' threads, but
just checking that you realize that Copenhagen is the city, Denmark is
the country, right? There isn't much more fishing in Copenhagen than
there is any any major city, however Denmark is FULL of great fishing
spots...many of them quite close to Copenhagen.

Just sayin'...

Okay, this is pretty pathetic considering what other have
been doing, but...

Got off early and got to spend a whole 40 minutes on
stream a couple of weeks ago. Not counting the hiking,
knot tying, de-tangling, that amounted to a whole
fifteen minutes of actual fishing. Used a single
green 4 mm Otter's eggs on a #14 hook. The idea was
to see if I could catch any browns on them. This under
the idea that green row simulate both carp eggs and
whitefish eggs, which would cover the ancestral
memories of both browns and rainbows. But 15 minutes
is not a test. I will definitely need a rematch.

Caught very pretty two rainbows, unusual for this river
as the rainbows usually are not much to look at. Both
about nine inches.

The first managed to put a 10 minute to untangle tangle
in to my leader when I released him. How do they manage
to do that?!?! Probably some sort of revenge.

The second one charged me when I set the hook. This is
the second this have ever happened to me. Makes for
some excitement as you think you have lost
the strike until you get an unusual amount of slack
pulled back in and realize you still have a fish. From joy,
to heart break, back to joy. I had a blast.

And today it is dark, colder than h---, and about
four inches of snow on the ground. Poop. Won't be
till next week that enough will have melted that
I will not break my neck...

You're right.

Ain't never been there, myself. Did see a map, though. The east side
of Copenhagen bumps slap up against a roughly 10x30 mile body
of.......wait for it.......WATER! Yep, that's right, good old
dihydrogen monoxide, notorious for (among other things) harboring
fishy things. Looks like it's some kind of back-water on the Baltic
or something or other. Whatever. The greater Copenhagen area has
what appears to be 20 miles or so of shoreline on this body of WATER!
There are, to be sure, sundry small bodies of water inland, within or
near the metropolitan area, but it seems safe to say they are
neglibile by comparison. Whatever. So, it would appear correct to
state that Copenhagen has no more fishing opportunities than say, New
York or Chicago or Los Angeles, but no more than "any" other major
city? Oh, I don't know. I'm thinking it has Phoenix pretty much beat
to ****.

And that ain't no ****in' joke.

g.
who, in the spirit of full disclosure, would like to state explicitly
that he has never caught a fish in any of the above named
places.....though he has eaten fish (or, at least, fishilike
substances) in three of them.....though he is pretty certain that none
of those eaten were natives.

I'm hunting pheasant, quail these days, while maintaining an eye on fishing reports from Michigan trout stream. A lot of rot salmon in the water, and now, if they get a good rain or two rainbow trout should be followed in the digital any time. I think this this year, I will stay in Ludington.
