first day with orvis waders

I just tried the Pro Guide 2 stocking foot waders on the water, as an
upgrade from Silver Label lace-up boot foots I have used for years. General
observations:

My Silver Labels (old style, not SL2's) also have the knee patch that fills
with water - annoying at first, but no big deal in the long run. I was told
by someone at Orvis that the knee patch provides the extra durability of 5
layer breathable fabric, without the cost. The Silver Label lace-up boot
foot waders were extremely uncomfortable on my feet to the point that I
could hardly walk at the end of the day (I have extremely flat feet, and
this may be the cause). Mine are also rather baggy, (something they say they
have corrected on the new SL2's), but that works well when layering up for
Steelhead fishing.

The Pro Guide 2's are great. The bagginess is gone, the handwarmer pocket is
very nice, the ergonomically shaped booties fit very nicely, two wading belt
pockets, no sewn-on knee patch, very handy suspender latches, and a handy
tippet spool pouch. The material seems heavier to me than the Silver Label
material, but it could just be the newness. Overall, I am very pleased.

It just dawned on me that perhaps Mr. Sullivan's waders have the knee

patches
sewn on up-side-down, so that the "v" notch is above the knee instead

below.

If that's the case, I can see how they could fill up and retain water

out of
the stream, which might even rise to the level of "aggravating"...

replacement...)

Nope, the slit is on the bottom of the patch. The problem is the space
gets completely filled with water, which adds a considerable ammount of
weight, and being in the water for several hours having to wade around
with it is kind of a pain.

Interesting. For the years I've been using them, I've never noticed this

as
being an issue, but perhaps I'm not the most sensitive guy around ;-)

I will probably just send them back and get the pro guides, which
I have been told dont retain water.

Let us know how you make out with them if you do...

I ordered the silver label 2 waders from orvis in the afternoon on
tuesday, and first thing wednesday morning UPS knocked on my door with
my orvis waders.

Comments:
Pro: booties are high density neoprene, and are alot more durable than
the regular neoprene on my old ADG waders. Waders are 5 layer protected
and are alot more durable than previous ADG waders.

Cons: A big one, the knee patch's have a slit on the front that allows
water to fill up the whole patch. VERY VERY annoying. I hope Orvis
fixes this "design".

Is it possible that the patch material is less stretchy than the fabric it
covers? If so, perhaps they added the slit to allow for better knee movement
when climbing over obstructions. Without a slit, they'd pull too hard on the
neoprene and come loose, or worse.

I doubt Orvis will be changing that anytime soon. I have a pair of Orvis
waders(old Guide Model)with this design. Like the others have mentioned,
i've never noticed any problems. Maybe you should to try and get your
money back. Get something that isn't "VERY VERY annoying". Fly fishing
shouldn't be that way.

Steve, you ever wonder why you have so many problems with ffing equipment?

:) Heh . . .heh . . .I have problems with all kinds of ffing equipment.
But I persevere, in spite of the many obstacles others have apparently
created for "just" me.

I had that same problem. I emailed Orvis, explained the siutation and they
offered me new ones with the new knee/shin design. I am happy with my new
ones. I also traded up in the process by paying the difference in price
between the ones I had and the Silver Labels.

Well it's been 4 years and they still haven't. Every so often I have to
stand on one leg and bend the other knee to drain the water, looking like
a guy imitating a ****ing dog.
