History, sadly to say, is written by the winner.

Exactly, and neither the Indians nor the Chinese will find
much of anything good to say about him.

I agree. Neither will Al Qaeda or Momar Quadafi, so there must have been
something wrong with the man.

What was wrong with him was that his visceral beliefs were so
fundamentally flawed. His message, professionally articulated,
was that your government is bad, you don't need it, all America
needs is to trust rich white guys to bust your unions, steal
your pensions, pollute your streams, dirty your air, feed your
children ketchup and it's OK, America. Don't worry, be happy,
because what's good for rich white guys is good for America,
it will all trickle down and you know what ? All we have to do
is work together to get the government off your back and you
too can be a rich white guy !!

And of course, his foreign policy was just a riff on the same
theme. What's good for rich white American guys is good for the
whole world. His was a vision of crony capitalism enforced with
a big stick and he didn't much give a **** about the niceties of
either American or international law when using that stick.

I can't find anything to admire or respect in the public man and
I doubt that history will either. But I suppose I should find
SOMETHING good to say about the private man. They say he never
mistreated a horse.

uh, i realize that this is stating the obvious, but i can't help making
the observation that being a rich white american guy does not necessarily
mean that you are incapable of displaying an almost limitless number of
positive characteristics, including a combination thereof that would enable
that person to be a truly great president. it could happen to me, for
instance. true, everyone would have to give me their money and their vote;
but it's doable.

Could someone please explain to non-americans what this thread is about? And
what does the song "drug store truck drivin' man" got to do with a boat
named after a former republican president?

I'm confused :o/

thank you
Thomas :oÞ

Maybe it's just me, but I don't think "Hey dahlin', what color Mercedes
do you like ?" is gonna cut it as a campaign slogan. Besides, do we
really need ANOTHER womanizing Southern Democrat in the White House ? ;-)

Now, now, now, you Lefty. How can you be so ungrateful to a man whom the
average TV watching, Nascar loving, Red blooded chicken-hawk electing
American can find so much to ignore? Come on now, forgive "Dutch."

After all, he WAS the first person elected president to cop the 5th when
asked about his Mafia ties, and he did put 400 Marines into one conveniently
destructible package in Lebanon, and who can forget his behind the scenes
negotiations with the Ayutulas to hold onto the American hostages in Iran
until election night, or for that matter trading arms for hostages in
general, and then there was the illegal drug dealing his folk (and the then
VP) used to fund the wholesale murder of farmers and Indians in El Salvador
and Nicaragua, not to be surpassed by the failure to even offer a budget for
several of his deficit ridden years, or his blatant delusion that he had
been a Navy pilot as well as one of the first to visit a concentration camp,
or even his visit to an SS memorial. He was, after all, the "Great
Communicator."

What the hell is wrong with you Ken? Why can't you just ignore this stuff
and just celebrate what a "Great Communicator" he was. I mean, why aren't
you more attracted to shiny objects? Come on, shed a tear for the Gipper. If
you can do that I'll pretend that John Wayne and "Rocky" were actual war
heroes, that Rock Hudson was a ladies man and that Cheney and Haliburton
have our soldier's best interests in mind. (I'll need a bottle of Blue
Sapphire to choke down that last one.)

Joan Baez dedicated the song in the Subject: of this thread to then
governor of California Ronny Raygun and changed a few of the lyrics
to suit the dedication during its performance at an event called
Woodstock. The loathing of Ronny has a long history in America,
despite what many Europeans may think of us.

At Woodstock, Joan Baez and Jeffrey Shurtleff sang "Drug Store Truck Driving
Man to the Governor of California-- "Ronald Ray Guns."

He's a Drugstore Truck Drivin' Man
he's a drugstore truck drivin' man
he' s the head of the Ku Klux Klan
when summer rolls around
he'll be lucky if he's not in town
he's got him a house on the hill
he plays country records till you've had your fill
he's a farmer's friend He's an unhappy gent
but he sure does make difference from the records he plays

well he don't like the young folks I know
he told me one night on his radio show
he's got him a medal he won in the war
weighs five hundred pounds and sleeps on his floor
he's been like a father to me
he's the only DJ, you can hear after three
I'm an all night musician in a rock 'n' roll band
and why he don't like me I can't understand

Hey, I have all the current mess in Kinshasa to thank him (and JFK) for. In
fact, at this moment, in the background on BBC radio is an interview with
some professor explaining why no one in DRC cares that he has died. They
take Voodoo seriously here.

Here's a better set of lyrics.

DRUG STORE TRUCK DRIVING' MAN
by Joan Baez featuring Jeffrey Shurtleff

He's a drug store truck drivin' man
And he's a head of the Ku Klux Klan
When summer comes rollin' around
We'll be lucky to get out of town
He's been like a father to me
He's like the only DJ you can hear after three
And I'm an all right singer in a country band
And if he don't like me
He don't understand
He's a drug store truck drivin' man
He's a head of the Ku Klux Klan
When summer comes rollin' around
We'll be lucky to get out of town
He's got him a house on the hill
And he can play, country records till you've had your fill
And he's a law man' friend
He's an all night DJ
Sure don't think much like the records he plays
He's a drug store truck drivin' man
He's a head of the Ku Klux Klan
When summer comes rollin' around
We'll be lucky to get out of town
He don't like resistance I know
And he said it last night on a big TV show
And he's got him a medal
That he won in the war
Weights 500 pounds and it sleeps by the door
He's a drug store truck drivin' man
He's a head of the Ku Klux Klan
When summer comes rollin' around
We'll be lucky to get out of town
We'll be lucky to get out of town

I was never a fan of Reagan nor his politics, to put it mildly, but it
seems to me that to gloat over his death reveals a serious character flaw.
