Leaders?
I use a 5 ft leader on my sinking lines. Seems to work for me. 9ft on
floating lines. wayne "George Adams" wrote in message ... From: "Sierra fisher" Using nylon leaders, I have had the occasion, that I am counting my sinking line down, and I look out and see that my fly is still floating on the surface. When you use a sinking line, you should use a very short leader in order to avoid the situation you describe above. I started tying my own bass/warm water leaders. I had been interested in
trying it. I use Harry Murrays smallmouth recipes from the Leadercalc spreadsheet. For trout I use Orvis Super Strong. I but the 9ft 4x leaders. I snap off some of the 4x, then tye on 5x and 6x. Kind of building my own with a tapered base and mid section. Works well. I can add 7x if needed. Count the knots to remember what size tippet I have one. wayne "Tim Apple" wrote in message al.net... Ok another one of my many questions. .... I was thinking it would be good to stick with one brand of leader to get to know it's qualities for turning over flies and such. I've had some 9ft leaders hat could turn a fly over and some that would create a huge wind knot with the same fly. So i'm looking to see where peoples loyalty lies as far as leaders and tippet go? I build my own leaders. Berkeley Trilene for the butt and taper sections, then Dai-Riki tippet. You can go with fancier materials, but Trilene has always worked fine for me, and the price is right. I have found that the hand tied leaders just work better. You can experiment with different materials and tapers to get the effects you want. For dries, the Harvey-style leader (30% butt, 30% taper, 40% tippet) 10-12 ft long, with a .017 butt and 5X or 6X tippet works very well. -- Rusty Hook Laramie, Wyoming |
